N, ews The CoUegian • Septeftfcet 3, 1991* 8 Rollbacks: fees may decrease Continued from page 1 steadily over the last 20 years. ASI President Andres Montoya echoed that sentiment. 'The state doesn't appear to have too much concern for education," he said. "1 would like to see more money for classes. A bunch of classes got cut, library hours got cut. A lot of seniors who are graduating aren't able to get theclasses they want, and they have priority." Chang said that SB 976 was facing "significant opposition'' from Gov. Pete Wilson's office, which he said wants the money for the state's emergency reserve fund. Health and welfare groups may also be interested in the money, Chang said. "We haven't seen that opposition surface, but we might see other groups step forward to claim the money," he said. If the bill passes, the rollback could take the form of checks mailed to students or of lowered fees next semester. The bill must pass both the state Senate and Assembly by Sept. 13, and be signed by Wilsonby Oct.l 3, or it - will die. The 20 percent fee increase Incurred by students .this semester was made possible by altering a statute that limited fee increases at public universities to actual costs, or to a 10 percent cap in the event of fiscal emergencies. Student government officeholders are urging passage of the bill, "SB 976 will put the money back in our hands and giveusback our education," said CSSA Chair Kim Williams.
