About this collection

The Collegian is the student-run newspaper committed to complete, fair and accurate journalism. Students present their perspectives on news, opinion, sports, features/entertainment and more. The mission of The Collegian has always been to motivate its readers to think critically and to react perceptively.  It operates as a laboratory classroom and a training ground for students interested in print and online journalism. The Collegian has been under the umbrella of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism since fall 1998.

The Fresno State Library houses the complete collection of The Collegian on microfilm going back to 1922.  In a three-year project the Library digitized the entire microfilm collection from 1922-1998 and it is now available online.   Browse the suggested topics below to discover what motivated our students over the years, what news made the front pages of The Collegian in the 1920s and 30s, or the 1960s and 70s.  What was happening on campus during the 1990s when our previous president took office?  The history of our university from the students’ perspective is available for all to research and to enjoy.

Information Regarding Text-searching This Collection

The Collegian was digitized from the Library's micofilm collection.  Both imperfections in the original newspaper and in the microfilm affected how well the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) process "read" the text and interpreted the characters.  We estimate that between 30 and 50 percent of the text was read properly, but not all of the words and characters from the newspaper were successfully digitized properly (and some words were distorted).  Full-text searching may present some difficulties because of these difficutlies in converting the source material into digital form.
