Six feet was the distance from
the cup on the 18th hole and if
senior golfer Ron Ewing sank this
money putt, Fresno State would
win its sixth straight Big West
Conference title
Ewing didn't choke.
"I was nervous. Afteritwentin,
1 blacked out," said Ewing who
finished Tuesday's action with a
round of 70at the22nd annual Big
West Conference Championships
at the Virginia Country Club in
Long Beach.
Ewing-sbirdieat the 18th helped
the Bulldogs edge favorite Ne¬
vada-Las Vegas by one stroke.
Fresno State finished with a five-
man team total of 8,58.
UNLV (859) owned theindi vid¬
ua! champion in Warren Schutte,
who shot a third round of 70 to nip
Ewing by two strokes.
San Jose State, the leader after
Monday's two-round first day,
finished in third with 866. Fresno

1 got such a big rush when the
putt went in," said Ewing, who
carded a 69 and back-to-back
rounds of 70 for a 209 finish. "1

vidual crown, bu t he said he'd take
the team title over that any time.

Randy Bridge's birdie at the last
hole helped him finish with his
second straight round of 69. He
shot a 74 on Monday and his 212
tally was good for third place.
Geoff Griffin, last vear's Big West
Player of the Year, struggled on
Monday with a 78 in round two,
but he rebounded with a 71 in
Tuesday's action, including a 33
on the back nine to assist in the
FSU triumph. Griffin was tied for
12th in the individual standings.
In 13 years as head coach of the
Fresno State program, Mike Wat¬
ney said he has never witnessed
sucfTah intense Bulldogs' come¬
back before.
"There's no doubt about it.
There's never been a time when
we've had so many heroics at the
end of a tournament," said Wat¬
ney, who enjoyed his tenth cham¬
pionship.
