STATUS REPORT
ON THE CITY
As a close associate of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,
The Honorable Andrew J. Young has been a leader
in public service and social change since the 1960's.
A graduate of Howard University and Hartford
Theological Seminary, he has received numerous
honorary degrees and awards, including the Presidential
Medal of Freedom—the nation's highest civilian honor.
From 1972 to 1977, Andrew Young represented the
Fifth Congressional District of Georgia in the U.S.
House of Representatives. From 1977 to 1979, he
served as U.S. Permanent Representative to the United
Nations, was a member of President Carter's Cabinet
and also on the National Security Council. As Mayor
of Atlanta from 1982 to 1990, Mr. Young's leadership
generated unprecedented economic growth and
community development. An outgrowth of his
international commitments, Mr. Young founded and
still acts as President of Young Ideas, Inc.—a nonprofit
public policy organization dedicated to improving trade
and investment relations between the U.S. and the
developing world.
