Collegian sports Thor SwtfV The Collegian California teammates Mario Cruz-Sands (9) and Janeen LaGrace (21) celebrate Christy Calderon's three-run triple which gave Cat a 4-3 lead in their win. Cal comes from behind, to beat 'Dogs By Chris Cocoles Collegian Sports Writer In recent years, the Fresno State softball team has consistently come from behind to beat the University of California. In the second game of Sunday's non-conference doubleheader however, the Golden Bears enjoyed a little payback as they salvaged a split with the Bulldogs. The eighth-ranked Bears (30-10) scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning after falling behind 3-0 and held off a Bulldog rally in the seventh for a 4-3 victory in front of an Easter Sunday crowd of 820 at Bulldog Diamond. Cal had lost 15 consecutive games to FSU —including a 1-0 defeat in the first game— dating back to 1988. "We broke the hex. We were tired of losing [to FSU]," said an ecstatic Robyn Burgess, who pitched a five-hit complete game victory and improved to 11-5 with the victory. "There's been so many games where we've led them 3-0 and 4-0 but they always came back and beat us," said Burgess. "We knew we could beat them all along, but we've been unlucky. This was a big, big win." Second-ranked Fresno State (30-5) jumped on Burgess early, scoring one run in the first inning and two in the third. The big blow of the third was Gina LoPiccolos two-run double to left-center. Despite the three run cushion, FSU starting pitcher Amy Windmiller ran into trouble in the top of the fourth. Two singles and an error loaded the bases for the Bears with one out. Windmiller walked in one run before Cal third baseman Christy Calderon blasted a three-run triple to left-center. Before Calderon's hit, Bulldog coach Margie Wright visited the mound but did not take Windmiller out of the game. "If Amy hadn't gotten the next batter I would have taken her out, but it was too late," Wright said. Windmiller remained in the game and shut down the Bears the rest of the game, but the Bulldogs couldn't mount a serious threat against Burgess before rallying in the bottom of the seventh. With two out, second baseman Julie Smith singled off Burgess' glove to keep FSLTs hopes alive. Christa Yorke followed with a ground ball right at second baseman Anne Williams, but she misplayed the ball. Smith, never hesitating, broke for third and crashed into Calderon just as she caught the ball and applied the tag, but Calderon held on for the game's final out. Despite the outcome, Wright was happy with Smith's hustle on the play. "Julie had to react on her own. She saw the ball drop to the ground and broke for third. It was good agressive baserunning and they had to make a good play to get her. Unfortunately they did," said Wright. "1 really thought we were good enough to come back and win the game" The Bulldogs took the first game by beating Cal Ail-American pitcher Michelle Granger. Granger pitched a three-hitter but gave up the game's only run in the first. Kim Maher's RBI single to center plated Smith, who led off the inning with a single. Bulldog starter Marcie Green scattered seven hits to win her 14th game. Bulldogs break out of hitting doldrums -FSU racks UOP pitching for 21 hits By Doug McLeod Collegian Sports Writer The University of Pacific baseball team proved to be the best medicine for ailing Fresno State, allowing the Bulldogs to sweep a three-game series in Stockon this weekend to open Big West conference play. The Bulldogs (21-11 overall, 3- 0 Big West) had struggled going into the weekend series by dropping five of its previous seven games before opening conference play against the Tigers. Thursdays opener saw FSU ace Bobby Jones throw a six-hit complete game to lead the Bulldogs to a 6-1 victory. Jones was expected to face UOP ace Joe Brownholtz, however Brownholtz was unable to start due to a history test. Freshman Danny Miller got the call and fell to 0-6 with the loss. The Tigers (11-18, 0-3) came out Friday looking for upset of the Bulldogs by getting out to a 3- 2 lead through seven innings. The Bulldogs hurt their cause by stranding nine runners through the first seven innings, but seven errofs in the last two innings led to four Bulldog runs, handing FSU a 6-3 win. Saturday's finale saw the Bulldogs collect 21 hits, including home runs by Chris Falco and Jason Wood, to coast to a 18-2 shellacking of Pacific. Until Saturday's game, FSU had scored just 20 runs in its previous five games and had averaged just three runs per game over the previous nine games. In the first two games of the series, the Bulldogs had collected just 11 hits as the team batting average fell to a season-low .298. FSU pitcher Jim Patterson pitched a six-hitter to collect his fourth complete game to improve to 5-4 on the year. The Bulldogs' first three hitters in the lineup, Vernon Spearman, Mike Noel, and Wood, combined for nine hits, nine runs batted in and 10 runs scored. Noel ended up going a career- best 4-for-4 with two doubles and 4 RBI's. Wood went'3-for-6 with 3 RBI's and Spearman went 2-for- 7 with 2 RBI's. Falco added three hits and 3 RBI's for the Bulldogs, while Doug Bame batted 2-for-3 for the Tigers. The Bulldogs wUl face UC Irvine this coming weekend on the road before returning home next Tuesday for a five-game homestand.
