Sports. BULLDOGS: Fresno State squeaks by LMU The Collegian • April 17,1991 10 Continued from page 9 Gomez. Catcher Wade Maxwell immediately followed with a monster two-run home run to left-center field to make the score 2-1, a homer whkh just missed hitting the flagpole before clearing the retaining fence that sits between the field and the parking lot. the Bulldogs added another run in the bottom of the third to put them up 3-1, when Mike Noel tripled into the right field corner, and then scored on Jason Wood's groundout to second base. The Lions, however, scored a single run in the seventh on an error, a past ball , and a double to close the score to 3-2, and then added another on a Perez home run to right field in the top of the ninth off a tiring Soderstrom to tie the game at 3-3. The teams then went three extra innings before the Bulldogs ended it Wood led off the 12th with a double to left-center, Johnson followed with a walk, and then Judice won it with the single to left, which scored Wood at home just barely ahead of the tag from catcher Joe Testa. Johnson picked up the victory for the Bulldogs, moving his record to W) on the year. Reliever Joe Caruso picked up the lossmfourinningsofworktotallto5-3. ... Maxwell went 3-for-5 on the night and collected two RBI's for the Bulldogs. Ciccarella ended the night 2-fbr-4 for the Lions. Notes— Second baseman Philip Romero had his 11-game hitting streak ended, going 0-for-5 on the night...The performance of Soderstrom and Johnson assures both more work after the collapse of the bullpen last Sunday and the recent struggles of third starter Jim Patterson... Jones snares the award with Hawaii's Scott Karl, who pitched a one-hit victory over Wyoming last week.
