The Collegian • February 7, 1991 Letters: Bring back the bins SAE: Evicted Continued from page 2 related to aluminum manufacture can be cut 95 percent by recycling. What could be more aestheucall y pleasing than saving energy and saving landfill space? FACT: If recycled aluminum is used, 90 percent less energy is consumed than if the aluminum was made from scratch. Class bottles that aren't recycled will be taking up landfillspaceforat [casta thousand years. If the complainer thinks the recycling bins are ugly, they are way overdue for a visit to their local landfill. The trash is piling up and the need for more landfill space is growing. You, as consumers, have two choices: 1) you can make less waste by recycling more, or 2) you can donate your backyard as the next disposal site. Now how aesthetically pleasing would thatbe?A landfill isn't going to be removed because it is an eyesore. This "out of sight, out of mind" attitude will have to cease, in order for a cooperative effort to emerge and take a bite out of the trash heap that is consuming our planet. It is hard to believe that people would rally to move bins that are helping make the world more livable. If these complaints had been made public or the Campus Planning Committee had expressed their intentions then it would have been possible for the many supporters of recycling to be heard on the issue. Unauthorized or not, the bins were a positive addition toCSUFand should have been left intact!
