Sports The Collegian • February 12,1991 Petrie has satisfying swim season By Chris Cocoles Collegian Sports Writer Fresno State swimmer Matt Petrie was "burned out" after two years of swimming and schoolwork at the University of California. After returning to the pool after a year-and-a-half away from it, Petrie might be the Big West Conference's best sprinter. The atmosphere [at Berkeleyl burned me out after two years. 1 to ; a year off," said Petrie, a junior from Hoover High School. Petrie was academically dismissed from Cal. He reapplied and was accepted to that school but decided to return to his hometown and transferred to FSU. "Fresno State offered me an opportunity to swim. 1 heard some good things about Teri [coach McKeeverj," said Petrie. "It helped that I lived here." Petrie started swimming at a young age. He began to swim at age six while living in Georgia when he began to swim on a regular basis. "We lived right by a country club that had a special swimming program. I joined the program and just stuck by it for a while," hesaid. Petrie was more than rusty after his long hiatus from competetive swimming. "1 gained some weight and it was an awful long time Iwithout swimming]," he said. "1 started lifting weights and added some strength." Petrie was one of the most consistent swimmers for the Bulldog men this season. Petrie has the Big West's fastest time in the 50 free [20:78], and the second fastest 100 free, but knows that will mean nothing at the Big West Championships later this month. "What matters is my performance at the Big West Championships," hesaid. As a sprinter Petrie knows he must be mistake-free to be successful. 'There isn't more pressure [in sprints], but you can't afford a bad start or bad turn," he said. "In distance races you can afford to make mistakes." Petrie, who also compete: :n the 100 butterfly, is glad he is swimming under an experienced coach like McKeever. "[McKeever] is a good coach and she was an excellent swimmer herself," Petrie said. "She knows which type of training is neccessary to become a good swimmer. "It's good to have a successful coach who knows how to be good," he said. The FSU men finished an up- and-down season with a duel meet record of 7-7. Petrie thinl?s the team performed as well as it could. "Compared to last season, we did a lot better than the year before. There's a good chance for us next year to improve mure," Petrie said. "I'm sure we'll do even better next year." Petrie, a business major who hopes to attend law school, has Stallworth: Sophomore already has qualified for NCAA Championships to be held at Indianapolis in March Continued from page 5 out of that element and put me in another element," said Stallworth. Stallworth moved out of his mother's home and into the Xavier home. "Dan and Barbara thought it would be best if 1 moved out, so we talked to my mother and we all agreed that it would be best," Stallworth said. It was Xavier and his wife Barbara who helped Stallworth get out of the bad part of Tulare and see that he could make something of himself. "I knew I had the athletic ability," he said. "1 graduated from high school (Stallworth was the first from his family to do so), and Dan and Barbara helped me and were there for me." Stallworth added that he no longer makes frequent trips to the town where he was born and raised. "There's nothing for me there, there's no future there. I don't put anybody down from my neighborhood because 1 love 'hem. I mean, it's all i grew up with for 17 years of my life," Stallworth said. After his senior year, Stallworth racked up some impressive credentials and experience. He won the Junior World Chamionships in the long jump and placed third in the 200 meters at the meet in Plovidiv, Bulgaria. This was quite an experience for Stallworth. "It was a good experience for me. It gave me the opportunity to compete against some of the best athletes in the world,"' Stallworth said. After sitting out last season as a Proposition 48 casualty, Stallworth, a physical education major, is ready to challenge for NCAA titles in both the long jump and the 200 meters. In his first dual meet for FSU against Northern Arizona, Stallworth won both the long jump (25-8 1/4) and 200 meters (20.99). Both marks were over the NCAA provisional quaifying standard for the indoor championships March 8-9 in Indianapolis and the 200 meter time was a new indoor school record. He just missed meeting the automatic marks of 25-9 and 20.86. Stallworth also has his sights set on making the 1992 Olymic team. "I think I can make the Olympic team, especially in the long jump and probably in the 200 as well," Stallworth said. After all is said and done, Stallworth wants to be able to take his success back to his community. "I have nephews, nieces, and cousins in Tulare who need my inspiration to achieve success, so I hope I can take my success back to Tulare,'' Stallworth said. Matt Petrie cut a specific goal for himself as a swimmer at FSU: To qualify for the NCAA Championships. "I want to go this year or next year to the NCAA's. It's one ot the most competitive fields around," said Petrie. 'Making the NCAA's is what drove me back into swimming.'
