Sports The Collegian • February 1, 991 Tickets aren't worth it By Chris Cocoles January 8, 1999, Fresno, Calif. Hello this is Keith "I'd rather be watching college football" Jackson at Pepsi™ Selland Arena in Fresno for this Big Western Pacific Conference war between the top-ranked UNLV Runnin' Rebels and the No. 2 Bulldogs from Fresno State. The news from 'Vegas this week was Rebel Athletic Director Jerry Tarkanian's bid To change the school's nickname to Turk's Sharks. Coach Larry Johnson and his top graduate unpaid assistant Ron Adams will have a toughie tonight with the 'Dogs. To tell you more, here's my partner the ageless Dick Vitale — "Keith, Keith are they paying us for_ this job? Oh Baby i''s rockin' and ratlin' here'. Look at all these face painted students: They're wackos! These students are the real PTP'ers here ... friis isn't Duke. Back to you, Keith." "WHOA NELLIE!" \o Dick. Selland Arena has not been mistaken for Duke University's Cameron Indoor Stadium, or for that matter, any other college basketball arena in the country. 1 really believe this school doesn't want students at basketball games. As you've probably figured out by now, I'm a college basketball freak and, if I could, I'd probably go to every game that the 'Dogs play. However, several factors prevent me from fulfilling this wish. L Cost — Student season tickets are priced at 85 bucks a pop. Last semester I barely earned half that price per month, which means it would take me a month and a half to raise the money to buy season tickets. Last year I spent $25 on a season baseball ticket and watched approximately 25 games. Does the See COCOLES, page 7 FSU bombs Anteaters By John Welsh Collegian Sports Writer J«»e Chentull/ The Coilegmn Fresno State guard Carl Ray Harris does one of his patented dunks against UC Irvine while the Anteaters' Jeff Herdman (11) goes lor the block. Harris scored 17 points as the Bulldogs beat UCI 88-75. A battle between two of the Big West Conference's lower- echelon teams Thursday night at Selland Arena resulted in a three-point bucket bonanza. UC Irvine won the shootout in three- pointers made, 13-12, but Fresno State won the game, 88-75. The Bulldogs are now riding a two-game winning streak after dropping five in a row. Last night's victory before 9,714 fans avenged an embarassing, 108-82 blowout the Bulldogs suffered at Irvine Jan. 9. Fresno State improved to 4-6 in the Big West and 9-10 overall and made a dramatic move from a three-way tie for last into the conference's sixth place spot. ig Beach State (3-5, 8-10) was idle Thursday and Utah State (5-4, 8-10) knocked off visiting Cal State Fullerton (4- 7, 11-9), all of which subsequently helped FSU move up the Big West ladder. On a night when long range shots were the norm, Dave Bamett proved his worth from beyond the three-point arc. Bamett, who was one Bulldog that remembered all too well FSU's nightmare at Irvine, connected on five of eight three- pointers. During a 12-3 FSU spurt late in the first half, he converted a rare four-point play when he sank a three-pointer as UCI's Ricky Butler fouled him. Bamett hit the following free throw - FSU attempted only five all night — and the 'Dogs were up, 42-31 with six minute? to play before intermission. "(Payback) was all we were saying in the huddle all night," said Bamett. "We paid them back pretty good " Consequently, Bamett nailer1 three straight three-painters during the FSU run and finished the night with a triple-double, scoring 22 points while registering 12 assists and 10 rebounds. As a team, Fresno State hit 12 of 22 three-pointers for the game. UCI finished 13 of 26 from beyond the three-point arc. An exciting offensive display by See BASKETBALL, page 7 Bulldog wrestlers win another one Zinkin and Neal once again lead the way for FSU; Roso breaks streak By Richard James Collegian Sports Writer The Fresno State wrestling team continued its winning ways with a 27-14 victory over Central State University yesterday. The Bulldogs improved to 12- 4-1, while Division II power Central State dropped to 6-4. Sophomore Harold Zinkin, wrestling at 126 pounds, defeated FSLTs Will Evans 6-0 to highlight the Fresno State victory. Zinkin extended his record to 18-5-1. Against Central State, FSU's Ray Roso snapped a six-match losing streak with an impressive decision over previously undefeated Greg Oplotnik at 190 pounds. Oplotnik came into the match with a 19-0 record. Freshman DeWayne Zinkin, brother of Harold, scored an impressive victory over Jeff Gowens at 134 pounds. Zinkin pinned Gowens, ranked third in Division II, at 3:36. Robbie Dicks, at 167 pounds, extended his record to 17-9-1 with a technical fall over Zane Stapp,23-6. Sophomore heavyweight Lorenzo Neal won his match by injury default over Central State's Fay Bamett at 2:23. Bamett was ranked No. 1 in Division II by AWN. Neal's record improved to 18-5-1, and he has not lost a match since Dec. 29 at the Fullerton Invitational. Neal's only blemish since then was a tie with tenth- ranked Mike Anderson of Arizona State. Last week Neal pinned Boise Stare's Chris Shepherd in 2:24 and BYU's Scott Fannin in just 47 seconds. Against Pac-10 opponents Neal is 6-1-1, losing only to third- ranked David Jones of CS Fullerton. Neal finished fourth at the Fullerton Invitational. Despite tying CS BakersReld's llth-ranked Ahmed El-Sokkary 7-7 and winning his next two matches on the road last week, Harold Zinkin slipped a notch from eighth to ninth in Amateur Wrestling News' rankings after his loss to sixth-ranked Shawn Charles of Arizona State. Earlier this season, Harold Zinkin defeated El-Sokkary 12- 2 at the Las Vegas Invitational. Harold Zinkin finished fifth at the Las Vegas Invitational earlier this year and first at the Fullerton Invitational December 29.
