Sports The Collegian • January 28,1991 Fresno State ends skid with win By John Welsh Collegian Sports Writer Dave Bamett went wild for the Fresno State men's basket ballteam Saturday nightas the Bulldogs knocked off visiting Pacific, 84-77, in a Big West Conference basketball contest. Fresno State ended a five- game skid with the win, improving to 8-10 overall and 3- 6 in the Big West. Pacific dropped to 8-10 and 4-5. Not only did Bamett prove himself defensively, recording a game-high four steals, he also chalked up 12 points and 11 assists before a Selland Arena crowd of 10,159. "[Bamett] played real solid," said Pacific head coach Bob Thomason. "He didn't take any bad shots and if he did they were very few. He did a great job of leadership for Fresno." Defensively, Barnett seemed to get his hand on the ball every time Pacific came down the court. In the first half, Bamett recorded back-to-back steals and helped Fresno State to a 21-12 advantage with 11 minutes left to play. Although Fresno State controlled the first half, enjoying a 12 point lead on two separate occasions, Pacific stayed in the ball game. In the second half, after Randy Lavender nailed a 17-footer using only his right hand, the Tigers led. 56-54. with 8:20 to play in the contest. Wilbert Hooker and Tod Bernard each scored four points during the crucial Bulldog streak. The wrestling and women's swim teams were the most impressive, as they each leave the break on high notes. Heavyweight Lorenzo Neal and 126-pound Harold Zinkin each won their matches against Brigham Young University, helping the Bulldog wrestlers to a 31-9 victory over Saturday in a dual meet at Prove, Utah. The win boosted FSU's record to 11-4- 1. Friday, the 'Dogs treated the home fans to a 31-10 victory over Boise State at the North Gym. ZinkJn's 12-2 defeat over Boise State's Chris Ward led Fresno State, while Robbie Dicks registered his team-leading ninth pin at 167 pounds. The women's swim team had a six-match win streak snapped Saturday by Northridge State, dropping them to 10-2 overall. Despite junior Kelti Affeldt's two wins, Northridge won 10 of 14 events to claim the 146-115 win at Clovis West. The women had previously defeated UC-San Diego 126-69 Friday at the North Gym pool behind double winners Angel Tristan and Erin Paul!. The men's team has also held its own, posting a 6-4 record after beating Northridge 150-111 Saturday. David Hodge, Garrett Nishimoto and Brad Huebert ail were double-winners for the Bulldogs. The women's basketball team recovered from a slow start and turmoil revolving around head coach Bob Spencer to maintain a 10-7 record, 3-4 in Big West play. The Bulldogs upset 25th- ranked Long Beach State 73-72 Jan. 23 behind senior guard Geri Gainey's three-pointer with five seconds left. Gainey topped the 1,000 point mark for her career Friday in the 'Dogs' 70-69 loss at New Mexico State. Spencer has been suspended without pay for 15 days after a university investigation determined he had sexually harassed former assistant coach Maureen Sharkey during the 1988-89 season. The Bulldogs knew what they were up against in facing the Road runners, which possess one of the most potent offenses in the Big West, averaging 82 points per game. After bolting to a four-point halftime lead, the 'Dogs went cold in the second half as the Road runners got hot behind the shooting of Rona Raven to go on a 13-0 run to give them a 50-37 lead with 11:35 left in the game. The Bulldogs were able to stay within striking distance with 9-for-15 foul shooting to pull as close as four points late, but Michelle Bento's three- pointer with one second remaining was not enough. With the loss, the 'Dogs fall to 3-4 in the Big West conference and 10-7 overall, while the Roadrunners move to 5-4 in the Bie West and 9-8 overall. Bulldog senior forward Geri Cainey scored a game high 26 points to break the 1,0T career- points barrier. She has 1,005 points, eighth best in school history. Sheri Brown added 14 points and 16 rebounds, while Stacey Comaggia had 16 points and 15 rebounds for FSU. Andrea Kabwasa led the Roadrunners with 18 points and nine rebounds. Longtime Fresno State assistant soccer coach John Bluetn, 37, was-jjamed head coach Friday in an announcement from Cunntngham, thus ending a search for a replacement for retired coach Jose EJgorriaga. Cunningham then announced Saturday that San Jose assistant volleyball coach Lindy Vivas had been named to 6U the post left by Leilam Overstreet.
