Track: Men's and women's teams set to start
season Saturday against Lumberjacks

"We have good balance, good
people in every event," Pagani
said, "we have very few areas
where you would say it's a
weak' area. Fiom a team point
of view, ifsa good strong team."
The women's team is led by
Nicole Carroll, who finished
among the top eight javeline
throwers in the nation at the
college level last year. Two
freshmen will be making their
first appearances for Fresno
State Saturday: Monica Missick
and Tanya Dooley.
Missick is scheduled to run
the 55-meter hurdles, while
Dooley will run the 400 meters.
"[Dooley] in high school has
run faster than our college
record," Pagani said.
Shannon Lieder, the school
record holder in the 800 meters
both indoor and outdoor, is
another top returnee for the
women's team.
"I admire her so much because
she is gritty, gutty; if the race
comes down to the last 50 meters
and two people are tied.
Shannon's going to find a way,"
Pagani said.
NOTES— Stallworth also
won two other medals at the
World Junior Championships,
taking a bronze in the 200 meters
(20.46) and anchoring the
winning 4 X 100 meter relay
team (39.13)... In last year's win
over NAU, Jackson set a school
indoor record in the triple jump
with a leap of 54-5 1/2... Abbott
was a member of the Australian
World Junior Team who lists
personal records of 3:46.78 and
8:532 in the 1500 meters and
steeplechase, respectively.
Lienau captures award

Fresno State senior Jason
Lienau was named to the 16-
member all-academic cross¬
country team Monday by the
NCAA Division I Men's Cross¬
country Coaches Assosciation.
Lienau was notified of his
selection by a press release early
Monday morning.
Lienau, who carries a 3.41
grade" point average as a
construction management major,
became etgiblc after placing
among the top 15 finishers in the
Far West district meet in
December.
Nominees were also required
to carry at least a 3.25 GpA in
their respective majors and had
to run in the NCAA
championship meet.
Lienau was the Big West cross
country champion in the 10,000
meters in 1989 and again in 1990.
He also finished in the top
three in the 1500 meter run in the
Big West track and field
championships last season.
