* Page 6 m^mg^^gm-g m *%*-r fraUy Collegian Trmsday, Nov. 8, 1990 Scrimmage showcases the big "O" Red-White intrasquadgame highlights running, slam dunks and excitement for the fans By Chris Brartam COLLEGIAN SPORTS EDITOR The Gary Colson Fresno State basketball company opened It's doors to the public Wednesday in the form of the annual -FSU Red-White Scrimmage at the North Gym with some exciting results. • * Before,- the season began Colson promised a different Fresno State team than under the previous regimes of head coaches Boyd Grant and Ron Adams. A team that would run, press and generate a I tl little excitement for the fans. After Wednesday's game, the plan seems to be working. The Red team came back from a 41-34 halftime defecit to pull away and defeat the White team 98-81 before a full house. . "Ifs a running but controlled offense." senior forward Chris Henderson said. "It fits my style because I'm athletic With an athletic team you have . to restrict us. but give us a little more freedom.'' Junior guard Sammy Taylor bad 21 points for the White team to lead all scorers, while Junior forward Tod Bernard poured In 20 points for the Red team. Colson's offense especially benefits newcomer Doug Harris. Harris..was a. highly recruited freshman after being named the Arizona Player of the Year in basketball in 1989. "There is a lot of Improvising in the offense." Harris said. "There's a lot of one-on-one and that's whatl like, andthat'sthewayweplay." Even though he scored eight points and made several impressive passes In the game, Harris wasn't totally satisfied with his play. "I dldnt play up to par, what I should play," Harris said. "I came out tense, and as a freshman. we come out tense. In the second half I loosened up: I knew It would come around sooner or later." Another newcomer to the Bulldogs Is 6-9 center Lee Mayberry. a transfer from Wyoming. Mayberry was Impressive, scoring 17 points, but he is Ineligible to play this season. Still, he felt he had fsome adde*f incentive to play well - ■ - ■ "This is my only chance this year to show the home town crowd what I'm all about," Mayberry said. Mayberry also admits he took an automatic liking to the wide-open offense. "My game Is a running game." Mayberry said. "It's not the slow-down, forty-paase^before-you-shoot- It kind of offense." The White opened up an early lead, stretching it to 21-9 with 12 minutes left in the first half. Alter halftime, the Red team took control, forcing turnovers and converting them into layups. The Red pulled within two points. 52-50 with 14 minutes left in the game on Carl Ray Harris'jumper \ in the lane. They tied the score at 54-54 on Dlmltrl j . Dannli McBroy/ The Daly Cdeakri I :" Sogcer team preparing rgrudgemotch [on's FarWest Regional final V ByDougMcLeod COLLEGIAN SPORTS WRITER The tenth-ranked Fresno State soccer squad will meet the University of Santa Clara this Sunday at 3 p.m. in a first round NCAA playoff match, as FSU will attempt to give retiring head coach Jose Elgorrtaga a National Championship'golng-away'present The match features two very succesful programs, as the Broncos (13 2-2), ranked No. 6. will be facing the Bulldogs (17-3-2). almost one year to the day of last years' Far West final match in which Santa Clara defeated theT>ogB2-l. In that game, Fresno State was on the verge of being blown out by the eventual co-National Champion . Broncos until-the "Dogs mounted a furious offensive comeback, which saw them miss several goals by a matter of inches, with many of the Bulldog shots either bouncing off goalposts or floating Just wide of the net Elgorrtaga has the squad preparing for Sunday* game as though It was Just a regular game. "We are going to prepare the way we prepare for every game,'1 he said, "we have scouting reports and are going to adjust the game to those reports." "Last year they defeated us on two goals that were gifts, but we played (them] probably even (In all other aspects]." Elgorrtaga, who was named Big West Conference Coach of the Year Monday for the fourth time in the past six years, will take his. 11-year coaching record of 169-57-20 into the game. He has won 73% of his games as FSU's head M&ch. Elgorrtaga and some of the FSU players are quite satisfied with the prospect of facing Santa Clara in the "It is kind of a mirror Image of what happened last year," Elgorrtaga said, "with the hope of keeping our string [alive] of unbeaten games at Bulldog Stadium." Defender Vlnce Martinez echoed the sentiment of playing Santa Clara when asked last week. 1 would like to fitce Santa Clara." he said,* they beat us last year, so [it would be nice to get revenge]." The Bulldogs have not lost at home since September 18, 1985 and. in that span, have carried a 20-0-2 record at Bulldog Stadium. FSU will be led by its stiflling defense (goalkeeper Chris Kuhn and defenders Geoff Gray. Lou Chacon, Vlnce Martinez and Erik Pottorfl) . a defense which has recorded 12 shutouts on the year and has allowed only 14 goals, and only two in the first half. Kuhn enters with a goals-against- average of 0.61 and has recorded 66 saves In FSU's 22 games. The scoring will come from a strong Bulldog offense, led by forwards Gerell Elliott (16 goals, five assists, 37 points) and Karl Ingeman (eight goals, seven assists. 23 points) and midfielder Ricky Villa (five goals. 10 assists, 20 points). The Bulldogs win enter the game as three-time Big West Champions but will be hobbled with injuries to several key players. Defender Kirk Steers is lost lor the season after' suffering a broken cheekbone against UNLV hast Sunday. Abo absent from the lineup will be nUdfielder David Santesteban. who ' suffered a foot injury while making a cut during Sunday's game. Questionable for the game will be Martinez, who had to leave aglnst the Rebels with a thigh injury, but he should be ready to go by game time. The Broncos will enter the game coining off last season's 20-0-2 campaign which saw them play to a 1- 1 tie with Virginia and share co- National Championship honors with the Cavaliers. Last season's success garnered head coach Steve Sampson (51-15-16. 5 years) National Coach-of- the -Year honors. awto Clara wiU be led by forwards Jeff Balcher (five goals, 17 assists. 30 " points) and Paul Bravo (five goals, nme:asslsts. 23 points) and their top scorer, midfielder Paul Halocher (nine goals, 12 assists. 30 points).
