"Unless someone comes forward with any information the case Is suspended.'' said CSUF Campus Police Lt. Steven King. ^_^ ' "_ Last February, vandals spray patoted4he~WoraT"Sick;". "We Spread AIDS." "Morbid" and "AIDS" In large bbckV letters across the lavender and pink exterior of the booth. Lavender and pink are colors associated with the Gay and Lesbian Civil Rights movement A CSUF custodian discovered the damaged booth at about 2 a.m. A spray paint can that was apparently used by the vandaIs was found tn a trash can nearby. Police began their investigation and speculated that the fingerprints from the can would be a key to identifying the vandals. King said the police department went to special lengths to solve the case but rhrj not "Even though the case was a misdemeanor [vandalism} we took the spray-paint can to the Department of Justice lab to have It fingerprinted. The lab was really helpful." King said, "Through our insistance, they put other important cases on the hack burner to test the partial fingerprints on the can we found. They don't usually do those kinds of things." The paint can was also traced to the store where lt was sold but authorities were only able to collect very vague information. "We were told the' person who purchased the can was a white. 6-foot tall male, but that didn't help us very much," King said. "It was not much to go on." Three suspects were questioned regarding the Incident, but they were released when no positive connection to the incident could be made ' King said the campus police department took extra measures to prevent other "hate Incidents." > v' "We had our officers drive through the Free Speech Area every hour," King said. "We also told them to drive to that area when they had a report to write up to make suresomeone was watching."'' GLBSA president Caren Thomas said that the booth has been overturned twice since the vandalism incident occurred. "Homophobic Ideas exist in everybody." Thomas said. "We are all homophobic. I Just hope people would open up their minds a little bit We do things a little different but 1 think it's our time to start speaking out I think students are learning - It's a slow process." GLBSA member Peter Robertson said that society often judges gays and lesbians by the sexual act alone; consequently, society has the wrong Idea. The skeptics were right Originally, the whole expansion was going to take place between the 1990-91 seasons. But because of the shortfall in revenue, the plan will take place in two separate phases. Listed as Proposition 121 on the ballot, the measure authorized the Issue of bonds totalling $450 million for higher education. Paul Bissonnette. assistant vice president for Administration and External Relations, said protects for CSUF funded by the act include: $9.8 million for construction of a Music Building addition and remodeling: $3.2 ndlhon for equipment for the East Engineering Buikhng- addiuon; $1.4 million for equipment for the University Farm Laboratory; $400,000 for working drawings for the Education Building; and $280,000 for upgrading the campus utilities system. Jim Miller, director of the CSUF Public Information Office, said about the building projects In various stages of development "We're tn a tremendous growth phase." On the November ballot is another higher education building bond act worth $10 billion - of which $24 million is schecduled to come to CSUF. Miller said.
