Winds blowing directly toward the Fresno Airport contributed to the canceled flights of over 70 hot air balloons during the International Balloon Festival. The balloons were to compete for $10,000. Balloon test is semi-success By Sam Diaz COLLEGIAN STAFF WRITER Si*? Despite the cancellation of Monday's race be¬ cause of errant winds, the California International Balloon Festival held this weekend at Fresno State was deemed a success. Over 70 different balloons raced in the three-day event to benefit Valley Children's Hospital. The balloonlsts participated in a "Hare and Hound" race. Each morning at 6:45. a single balloon would take off from the starting area Just west of the Peters building and drift away from campus. When the "hare" balloon landed, the pilot would get out and draw an X on the ground. The rest of the field, the "hounds", then took off 7 a.m. and headed for the X. When they reached It the pilot would try to drop a bean bag on It from the air. It was well worth the effort for the competitors. The Valley Children's Hospital Foundation offered over $10,000 In prizes to to the top three finishers. Including a solid-gold ring. The balloons landed Saturday in a grassy field just south of Woodward Park, backing up along.
