By Chris Branam COLLEGIAN SPORTS EDITOR When push came to shove between Fresno State and Eastern Michigan at Bulldog Stadium Saturday. FSU came through with a resounding knockout The Bulldogs beat the Hurons41- 10 before a packed house of 32,188 red-clad fans in the opening game .of the 1990 season for both teams. Junior quarterback Mark Barsotti completed 22 of 33 passes for a career-high 281 yards and senior tailback Aaron Craver rushed for 99 tough yards on 30 carries to lead the offensive explosion for Fresno State. m. The Bulldog offense racked up 477 total yards against the the Huron defense* which was ranked No. 1 in the Mid-American Conference in 1989. a Barsotti enjoyed his best day statistically against a veteran EMU secondary. "1 feel a lot more comfortable with the system.*' Barsotti said. 1 have been here three years and it's about time things are changing." Barsotti broke open a close game in the third quarter when he executed the play of the game. On third down and one yard to go from the Huron's 33 yard Une, Barsotti faked a handoff to Craver to the right, kept the ball on his hip pocket, and took off for the left corner of the end zone. Barsotti's touchdown gave FSU a 21-10 lead with a little over seven minutes left In the quarter. "We had been running an unbalanced Une the whole game," Barsotti sale}, "and every time I gave the ball to Aaron, or whoever, they wouldn't honor the bootleg. I Just took it upon myself; 1 figured I could get at least two yards out of the deal." FSU head coach Jim Sweeney was impressed with his quarterback's performance. < . 1 don't remember any quarterback except for some of the great wishbone quarterbacks, who dominated a game with key plays like he did tonight," Sweeney said, Craver rushed for only 61 yards on 19 carries in the first hall "You kind of never know what to expect from the first game," Craver said. "We had a lot of new people so you'll never know how they are going to perform." Eastern Michigan scored Its only touchdown midway through the second quarter, thanks mainly to defensive back Charles Thompson's 67-yard punt return to give the Hurons' possession at the FSU 20-yard line. Junior quarterback Shane Jackson plunged over the top of the pile four plays later to give EMU a 10-7 lead with 6:27 left before the intermission. Fresno State then staged Its best drive of the game, covering 68 yards on 18 plays, capped by C raver'3 one-yard plunge as FSU retook the lead with 59 seconds left in the half. And for the Fresno State women's volleyball team, their 1990 motto was illustrated Monday night in the championship match of their1 own Dan Gamel Invitational. Fresno State rebounded from a 2 games-to-1 deficit to defeat the University of San Diego. 15-3,12-15,2- 15. 15-10, 15-12 before a North Gymnasium crowd of 467. "They are so determined to win that I don't think (the 1990 Bulldogs) will ever be a team that will 'lose' matches or quit" said 20th-year FSU head coach LeUani Overstreet last year, Fresno State lost 12 of its last 14 matches, ending the season 11- 19 and a disappointing 3-15 in the Big West Conference. Bulldog sophomore outside hitter Andrea Radmilovich. who was named tournament Most Valuable Player, said last year's team seemed to fold when the going got rough. She said this year Is another story. "This team has the right attitude." said Radmilovich. who set a Dan Gamel Invitational match record with 29 kills against the Toreras. Coupled with FSU's Sunday.night victory over San Francisco in the first round, the Bulldogs are undefeated after their first two matches for the second straight season. Radmilovich also dug out 20 defensive saves—another tourney record. - Senior setter Kleran O'Leary, who was named to the all-tourney team, looked primarily to Radmilovich In the match's heated moments. Overstreet noticed. "Andi seems to make something out of nothing or out of something weird." said Overstreet. who picked up her 235th career victory Monday night. Down 8-4 In the fifth gc*w, the Bulldogs produced a 6-1 streak and took the lead for the first time, JiU Princeton (5 kills, 17 digs) layed down a dink to give the Bulldogs a 10-9 advantage. San Diego (2-1) grabbed the lead back, 12-11. when Bulldog Amity Quist failed to connect on a pass. No matter.
