ByBethCorbo COLLEGIAN STAFF WRITER Flickering candle flames lit the way for over 430 people who marched Tuesday night In Fresno's Tower District in what organizers called a peaceful demonstration against recent hate crimes In the area. The walk began at 7:50 p.m. at the comer ofFem and linden streets, the site of an attack on 26-year-old Paul WeJbezahn. a Fresno man who said he was called a "faggot" and beat unconscious by skinheads Aug. 16. TMe recent Incidents In the Tower District caused area residents to band together to spread the message that they are not going to stand for further violence. There were several speakers at the event. Including Fresno City Council Member Craig Scharton, who urged hate-crime victims to report attacks. / "We do not tolerate violence toward any group or any' individual.'said Scharton. Caryn Horwltz, a CSUF criminology professor and co- advisor for the Gay. Lesbian and Bisexual Student Alliance, said the march wasn't only about gay-bashing. "It is about taking back the streets and feeling safe." she said. Police patrolled the area as the procession moved down Van Ness Avenue amid honking car horns and residents waving candles from their front lawns.
