FSU volleyball headed to Fullerton By John Welsh COLLEGIAN SPORTS WRITER If Fresno State's women's volleyball team wants to prove the Big West Conference critics wrong about Its predicted eighth-place finish, It needs to become a better road warrior. The Bulldogs were 4-13 last year In matches played away from home.. FTesno Slate is 1 -9 in Its last ten road matches and has lost three straight on the road. FSU. off to a 2-0 start after winning its own Dan Camel Invitational Monday, are at Cal State Fullerton today through Saturday for the Titans' 16-team JMN Prr miere. Tournament competitors are divided Into four pools of four teams each. Fresno State is in pool number two. along with Oregon State, Idaho State and Big West Conference member Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo. The 'Dogs open tourney play against Oregon State today at three, followed by an evening match against conference rival Cal Poly-SLO at 7:30 p.m. FSU went 0-2 against the Mustangs last year and are 6-22 lifetime against Cal ft)h/-SLO. Idaho State and the Bulldogs will face off for the first Ume ever at 2 p.m. tomorrow. Following pool play, an eight-team single elimination championship tournament and an eight-team single elimination consolation tourney will get started. FSU's two matches In 1990 have both been battles. .-. The Bulldogs dropped the first game In its match with the University of San Francisco, then won three straight. In the second game, they rallied from a 2-1 deficit to beat the University of San Diego and win the championship of the Dan Gamel Invitational. FSU head coach Lellani Overstreet thinks today's two tight contests will aid the'Dogs in Fullerton. Who knows? There are several front- runners that have been mentioned in the pre-season Issues of several magazines. Among them are: Dental Lewis, tailback. Texas A&M. He Is a fine running back, but he didn't look Impressive against Hawaii last flanker/klckoff- retumer, Notre Dame. Give me a break. He's not even as good as Tim Brown, former Golden Domer and Helsman winner in '1987. Brown didn't deserve the trophy, either, but that Is a seperate argument. The editors of Naw & Gold. Notre Dame's football magazine, aren't going to fool the-voters like they dfd in 1967. ty Detmer, quarterback. Brlgham Young Young! Ho hum. Another quarterback from BYU who throws for 600 yards a game. Like we've never seen that song-and-dance routine befit*. This season's Helsman Trophy will go to: Todd Marfaaoricky quarterback. Southern California. Marinovich is only a sophomore, but the "Robo QB" plays as If he were In the National Football League. Marinovich looked like a man among boys as he dissected the Syracuse defense In USC's 32-16 win last week. 2) Who will win the mythical national champioship? The University of Clemaon. The Tigers return 10 of 11 starters on defense, and those returnees are pretty damn good. Pre-season Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year Levon Kirkland leads a veteran group of linebackers that are the most ferocious hitters In the nation. This defense projects five starters on the All-ACC team. Tiger Coach Ken Hatfield will learn to love the Saturdays at Memorial Stadium, or "Death Valley" as It Is more affectionately called by Clemson rooters. Hatfield Is no stranger to winning. He has compiled a .621 winning percentage (82-48-2) over his 11-year career, Including last year's 10- 2 Arkansas team. The Razorbacks won two consecutive Southwest.
