Page 9 The Dally Collegian Monday, August 27, 1990 FSU Soccer 'Dogs trounce Baja by Doug McLeod COLLEGIANSPQRTS STAFF The Fresno State University soccer team opened its season Sunday night with an impressive 5-0 victory over Universidad de Baja California in the fifth annual Rotary Cup at Bulldog. Stadium. The llth-ranked Bulldogs were led by senior forward Karl Ingeman who' scored ,wo goals and added an assist. Junior forward Gerell Elliot scored a goal and .-■ 1 so added an assist. < Fresno State thoroughly dominated tie game from the opening whistle, t missing its first chance less than three minutes into the game, before connecting on its first goal 13:08 into the first half. Ingeman collected, his first goal after collecting a pass from defensemen Chris Johnson, played the ball off his chest, and then put a left-footed shot past goalkeeper Ivan Chairez. Fresno State dominated from there and allowed only two shots on goal for the whole game. Head coach Jose Eigorriaga, who is entering his eleventh year at Fresno State, thought that the Bulldogs were allowed by their opponets to play their type of game. " We were able to move the ball at will and showed we could pass the ball ancj work on some set plays... that went for scores." Fresno State displayed pinpoint passing throught the game and experienced no letdown when sevfeal substitutes entered the game. Freshman Sterling Wescott collected an impressive goal from 15-yards out in the second half, after missing an easy five yard shot moments earlier. Perhaps the most electrifying goal came from sophomore midfielder Jason Gray who put a 15-yard bullet past Chairez to put the Bulldog's up 3-0 and all but eliminated any chance for a miracle comback from Universidad de Baia. The game was a physical match, featuring 32 fouls; 16 to both teams, and two yellow cards, both collected by Universidad de Baja players. FSU forward Gerell Elliott battles three Bajcfaefenders as Bobby Focht UAySooteo^^00**9" Glad to be back in Bulldog Country John Welsh -^Here I am once again, backin Bulldog Country. And you know, as painful as the words exit my lips, it's almost nice to be back. I'm talking strictly in the sportstistical sense, mind you. Fresno may not be my idea, of the most happeningest of towns {being that I am an LA native, you probably; understand), but at least there's consolation in knowing I attend a school that knows" how to make things happen on the football field. The biggest Red Waver in these parts I am not, .'lit I jm proud to be enrolled in an institution that boasts the Big West Conference1 champion in football the past two seasons. Let us not forget the Bulldogs' back-to-back Cal Bowl titles, either. That coach Sweeney sure knows how to produce winners. The great thing is, Sweeney (entering his 13th year as the Bulldog boss and sporting a 97-39-1 record at FSU) produces winners all the way around. , . What's just as nice as Cal Bowl crowns is the men under the Bulldog helmets. I can't say I have met one Bulldog that 1 have thought was a bit rude to me. Now, either Fresno State keeps its scandals under wraps, or the FSU crew is simply a good group of ballplayers. I tend to think it's the latter. I've interviewed several "Dogs in my days and 1 have.yet to meet a Jim Sweeney gridder that has treated me with the slightest bit disrespect. That says a lot about a team. — You win all the football games you want, but if the team is known for a bad attitude.:.well, that don't cut it with me. Being that Fresno State sports the winningest program in the west the past five years (47-10-1 for an .826 winning percentage), 1 probably wouldn't mind a bit of cockiness. But I'm glad FSU players are, for the most part, down to earth players. I'm very glad I don't attend New Mexico State. The Aggies haven't won a Big West Conference' contest over the past three seasons (0-21) and are a hapless 2-40 in Big West action since 1984. I'm glad I'm not at Pacific. The Tigers, another Big West cellar dwellar, haven't had a winning season since 1977, when they finished 6-5. Fresno State, on the other hand, hasn't lost a conference ball game the past two campaigns am! have won a total of 15 consecutive conference contests spanning three seasons. At home in" Bulldog Stadium, AKA' "The Doghouse," Fresno State has won 16 straight and are 51-10-1 since the. stadium's initial game in 1980. Enough of the numbers, though.
