"All I know is what I read in the paper."-Will Rogers Fortunately, Bill didn't attend CSUF. For If he had. he would have taken as truth what the Collegian prints about the ASI and would have believed, as many CSUF students do, that if it doesn't make the paper then the problem doesn't exist. Although 1 detest the obvious bias of the paper, its editor, and its staff, all subsidized by student monies, i am especially unforgiving for its suppression of what Unity-SRG pulled during the budgeting process. When 1 confronted Eric Sumey [sic] and a staff writer and asked why there had been no coverage of the discriminatory actions perpetrated during the budgeting process, I was told that they had intended to write a story but the meeting went too long. The meeting went too long?77 Come on guys.... if a Reality parry member was being roasted at a senate meeting or that popular topic of yours racism was at Issue it would have made page one. like it has all year, but since a bunch of clubs and organizations representing students from all walks of life had funds slashed from their budgets and diverted to Black and Hispanic clubs no big deal..., right?Just fill the front page with articles from the College Press Service and wait for the Racism Task Force to persecute some "White" institution or individual. Now that makes good copy! Chris Heridla [sic], editor of one of the minority papers worthy of no more than wrapping fish or lining bird cages, In his blatant, malicious attack of Ted Hallisey last week, stated that the minority inserts and the Unily- SRG party are platforms for advancement of the Chlcano community and other oppressed people. In tins he Is correct but what he failed to mention Is that the Collegian is the voice and platform of the Left and anything contrary to this perspective has no place In Its confines. Has Unity-SRG advanced the interests of- these "oppressed Individuals" you might ask yourself and how will it affect me Individually? Gander for a moment at the 1990-1991 budget summary 1 have prepared for your reading enjoyment and the answer will enlighten you, as well as, "lighten" your wallet. Under Cultural and Miscellaneous, the Chlcano Youth Conference was increased 181 percent The Black Student Recruitment was increased 421 percent. The Armenian Student Organization was decreased 100 percent. The Interfratern- ity/Panhellinlc Council was decreased 56 percent' Under the School of Agriculture. Mexican Students in Industrial Technology was increased by 32 percent. The Agriculture Joint Council was decreased by 35 percent. The Dairy Club was not budgeted. Under the School of Engineering, the National Society of Black Engineers was increased by 300 percent. The Society of Hispanic Professionals was increased 200 percent. The Society of Manufacturing Engineers had no change to their budget. Under the School of Arts and' Humanities, the African American Educational Society, a new club, received $1,000. The Arts and Humanities Joint Council was not budgeted. In the School of Business, several clubs and organizations were funded below levels enjoyed during the past fiscal year. But remarkably enough, the Hispanic Business Student received an outrageously high ratio of dollar funding per member when compared to ail other business organizations. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that organizations that benefit all students were severely cut, while those clubs and organizations that cater to Blacks - and Hlspanics were outrageously supplemented. In fact many dubs that previously didn't exist have been funded more than well- established clubs and oTgaiuzanons. For example, the Interfraternlty Coundl/PanheUinlc organization represents over 1,100 students on this campus and was budgeted a' mere See LETTERS, page 5 Ted Hallisey I think ii is lime fora positive article. andt want to use MY column lo thank, congratulate and praise some people and events that I feel deserved special recognition foriheir accomplishments during this past school year. There are many people and events to cover and if I accidentally overlook yours, please contact me and let me know. 1 am sure I will here about some that I purposely overlooked, also. Well, let's gel started with the praises first. 1 would liketobegin with a person who will come as a surprise tc most people. He will be surprised, loo. Frank Aviles deserves my praise and respect regardless of all of the differences lhat we have had. At the beginningof the year. Frank set some lofty goals for himself and then went out and made sure they were accomplished. Although he was opposed by many people, myself included, on many controversial issues, he was successful at the majorityofthem. That's more than many senate members were able to do oreven attempted todo. Good job. Frank. As far as the rest of the senate goes. I'm hard pressed to find too many olher major accomplishments mixed in with the great political battle. Actually. I should congratulate all of the senate members who completed the year. I know it was not an easy or enjoyable task. Daphne Alfstad and the nursing department deserve a hearty handshake for theirefforts. Daphne did a great job in representing her school on the senate and in the joinl council. She opened my eyes to the tremendous workload that they face in addition to all of the valuable services they provide to the campus and the community. Think about it next time you're in the hospital. Is It the doctor or the nurse that helps to relieve your pain? I guarantee you it's the nurses. 1 found out recently after I broke my wrist during spring break. Thanks Daph and the nursing department! While we are on the subject of individual schools and their contributions, lets mention the Agricultural Department I especially want to mention the tremendous Job IheydidatlheFFAfieldday. It was the final competition in California for manyeventsanditwentoff without a hitch. Congratulations lo Kathl Machado, Eric. Emmet. Lisa, Judy. Barbara. Elaine. Laura. Michelle. Tracy. Jonelle and every other person who was involved. I enjoyed being involved. Even the nameless pain didn't take away from this event. We should all be very proud of our excellent ag. psogram. Congratulations also goes to the Speech Department for the Peach Blossom evenL Itwasagreat feeling to see all of the grade school students successfully displaying their public speaking abilities. I Celt a little challenged by some of them. My respect is also extended to the Academic Senate for addressing the ROTC issue and considering revoking college credits if they don't allow gav and lesbian people to participate, lam glad someone else believes it is wrong to discriminate against ANYONE, especially someone who is trying to serve their country. The ASI senate also should be commended for expressing its displeasure with this type of exclusion by any campus organization. The Bulldog Republicans should be praised for the outstanding Job they did as host of (lie state College Republican convention. Lance Donny, Jeff Andersonvand Nicole Kasabian and their crew were an excellent reflection of the competence of clubs and organizations onthlscampus. Also, the$200 donation to the Mason center was super. Praise should also go to the University Democrats for pursuing and supporting the issues they feel are Important An extra thumbs up goes to their president and her never-ending courage and persistence. * Cheers to the Bucket for bringing back the pitchers and more importantly, to Phil and his associates for knowing when to tell us when to say when. Yes. 1 am included in that us because I was asked to leave once...ortwlce. Before I close. 1 give my praise to Stacey Green for the jot) she did as chair at Tuesday's senate meeting. 1 truly think things are going to be a lot more productive on the ASI senate next year. My respect also goes lo JoeTrumpower, Lawrence Tovar and the rest of the Student Court for attempting to Insure justice on this campus. For Andres Montoya. for supporting whatyou truly believe in. A big hurrah to Walter Robinson and everyone else who participated in the Racial Harmony Conference. ! am SURE It did some good. Thanks should also go to Dave Pinuelas. Steve Mortensen and the USU staff for all that you provide to the campus and students. Last, but certainly not least is the thanks that is deserved by Esther Maniscalco and Mike. Withoutyou.theASlwouldnot function very effectively. And to Sgt. Silva and Sgt. O'Reilly and the campus police for helping me exit Ihe senate meetings and for keeping our campus safe. For the opportunity to develop my media skills, I thank Eric at the Collegian and LisaatKFSR. Forallof the people who I may have missed. I apologize to you and thank you trr advance for the contribution that you made to the campus and community. THE DAILY COLLEGIAN Editor in Chief Eric,Bumey Mnugmg Editor.
