Taylor needs to get facts straight -Dear Editor, Mr Taylor's last letter in typical fashion applies yet again thefaulty notion that evolutionary theory is in conflict wilh the second law of thermodynamics Wiien one examines religious iaith the underlying source of such bogus science as creatlonalism, one must remember what faith'is. Faitt) is belief wilhotil proof. Though ' there is what some consider ' evidence lo support religious beliefs i.e. the Bible. there is nothing scientific to support the creationalist view of the origins of life. Contrary lo Mr. Tavlor's assertion thai the fossil record supports crealionalism. the fossil, record provides indis¬ putable proof lhat different animals existed at different times. One needs merely to view the geological strata to see thai the fossil remains of dinosaurs always precede, by what has been determined lo be hundreds of millions of years, the remains of earliest man. I am sure Mr. Taylor will not be affected by these facts and will probably rationalize a way to pervert t5is evidence lo support his pseudo-science. Mr. Taylor's agrumeril regarding (he second law always triumphing over an individual is short sighted and typicaliv faulty. Yes M- Taytoj. I am mortal and will die someday. But my genes, the missing code belter known to real scientists as UNA. will be passed on lo my children. Though 1 respect Mr. Taylors right io practice his religion 1 will fight lo lhe end his attempt to corrupt science with something lhat t ca.ters to his particular Jwiiefs. This attempl lo creale a "scientific theory.'' which has zero support outside religious circles, is no different than the infamous practice of communist nations of creating their version of history to pul Iheir country in a more favorable light. Mr. Taylor, suffering from insecurity with his faith, feels threatened when science provides us wilrpa more accurate picture than the Bible presents. Science does nol attempt to disprove the Bible, it merely advances the knowledge using information and techniques of inquiry that was unavailable to the writers of the Bible thousands of years ago. James Newlyn More opposition to Playboy To the Editor: —We- are firmly opposed—to- Playboy magazine's recruitment of women students from our campus for their special issue. "Girls of the Big Wesl." First there are no "girls' enrolled at CSU Fresno. The infantilization of women students, by referring to them as "girls," reinforces the sexist notion that women are childlike rather than mature an# capable adults with serious commitments to attaining their educational and professional goals. Further, women who may be In the process of running for political office. of seeking Judgeships or other positions of public trust some years from now, risk character assassination and destruction of their careers if some unscrupulous opponents choose to make public the fact that they once posed for a men's sex Second, we are committed to correcting the sexist assumption that women are fundamentally sex objects, whatever their Individual CMtHfttflM and personal qualities might be. Playboy's recruitment . ads contributed to~ a "chilly climate" on the campus for many women by- reinforcing the notion lhat women are sex objects^ This stereotype leads lo women students being, taken less seriously as scholars, leaders, and equals of their male peers. Ultimately, a sexist campus climate diminishes the educational experience of all students. Those of us committed to gender justice at CSUF are therefore firmly opposed to the exploitation of women's sexuality that Playboy represents. It is most unfortunate that, at a time when so many men and women on our campus are working to undo traditional stereotypes of women as sex objects. Playboy has chosen to reinforce this outdated and destructive notion. Walter A. Robinson. Chair Marda E. Bedard Member Representing the President's TaskForce on Racism, Sexism, and Homophobia. All ofthe results are public information lhat is available to all students. This includes reporters from these supplemental editions.
