Cary Windes, a late-inning defensive replacement, hit a two out single to set up Noel's heroics. Noel. 0-for-4 on the day. drilled a I -2 fast ball to deep right that froze Beverly for an Instant, and the ball hit the bottom ofthe fence. Beverly picked the ball up on one hop. but Windes has good speed and by the time Beverly's throw reached the Infield, Windes was across the plate with the winner. Noel struck out In the ninth inning, and the junior center fielder said that he had an added IncenUve going Into his at-bat In the tenth. "Any time you mess up. you want another shot," Noel said. "It's nice to get another chance, and I happened to get It In a crucial situation. I came through, which was really nice for a change." UOP scored It's only run *tn the fourth on Keith Johnson's long home run over the left field fence. Johnson. Hanford High's athlete of the year in 1989. hit a long drive that was foul by about six feet on the previous pitch. "I had [Johnson] 1-2 and I just hung a slider." Grewal said. "He hit it pretty well. He Is a good hitter. "I knew we were going to win this game," Grewal said. "1 didn't know now long It would take, but 1 knew we were going to win it." NOTES— Grewal has struck out 62 batters in 60 Innings this season...Borgese's single In the ninth extended his hitting streak to nine games...Fresno State starter Steve Wolf struck out 12 UOP hitters in the Bulldogs' 3-1 win Saturday, giving the Junior 103 K's on the season, a career- high...
