Collegian Sports . > California State University, Fresno Tuesday, April 5,1988 Bulldogs sweep Anteaters By Lee Passmore Sports Writer Although two of its wins in a three- game sweep 6f UC Irvine were not typical Bulldog triumphs, the No. 3-ranked Fresno Stair baseball team continued on its roll last weekend. Saturday's 4-0 victory over Irvine at Beiden Field stretched the Dogs' winning streak to 15 and gave them a 32-6 overall record and 6-0 mark in the PCAA. It also concluded a successful, if not exactly exemplary series with the Anteaters. Erik Schullstrom pitched his best game in a Bulldog uniform on Saturday, shutting out UC1 with only five hits and tying his career-high of 12 strikeouis. It was Schullstrom's second shutout of the season and raised his record to 7-1, lowering his ERA to a team-leading 1.84. Schullstrom's performance capped a trio of fine pitching performances for the T>ogs against the Anteaters. John Salles on Thursday night and Rich Crane on Friday night each pitched complete-game victories. Bulldog Head Coach Bob Bennett felt the series was one of the best pitching performances by his team this season and was particularly pleased with the freshman Schullstrom's victory. "Schullstrom mixed up his pitches well," said Bennett. "He has a good fastball and he threw a hard slider today." As it turned out. the good pitching came in very handy for the team, particularly on Saturday. "We did need a shutout because we didn't hit the ball like we should have," said Bennett Indeed, the Bulldogs, who piled up 48 runs in their three-game series with Long Beach State the previous weekend, only managed seven hits against Irvine on Saturday, their lowest total of the series. The 'Dogs got all the scoring they needed in the bottom of the third inning when they got the first of two unearned runs. With two outs and no men on, Tom Goodwin lashed a single to the gap between left and center. Anteater left fielder Chns Dray misplayed the ball and it rolled to the warning track. Goodwin sped to third on the error. The next hitter, Eddie Zosky, lined a single up the middle to score Goodwin and give FSU a 1-0 lead. Zosky was the 'Dogs' hitting star on the day, getting two singles and an RBI. The Bulldogs then proceeded to score a run in each of the next three innings. Mike Burton singled with one out in the fourth and Steve Hosey had a bloop double to right field that moved Burton to third base. Burton scored when Steve Pearse grounded to second to extend the lead to 2-0. The 'Dogs then tallied a run in the fifth without collecting a single hit. Goodwin, on first after hitting into a force" play, stole second after Irvine catcher Don Nicholson hobbled the ball. Goodwin then stole third and came home when Nicholson's throw went into left field. This made it 3-0. Goodwin got credit for two steals in the sequence to give him 37 for the sea- Please see SWEEP, page 10 Bulldog second baseman Kathy Mayer thwarts a stolen base attempt during Fresno State's double-header split with California.
