"It's like starting over. "We're not going to have that problem oat year. The team is going to be extremely lough." Gerety, of course, will not be playing for the Bulldogs next year. But be will still be most concerned the team's welfare; ntts slated to become FSU's assistant coach while finishing his physical education degree. "Chris is going to be an extremely good assistant coach," said Stine, "The attitude and desire he has when he plays will carry over into coaching." One thing that's remained constant throughout Gerety s career — and along with his aggressive brand of play, made him one of FSUs more identifiable players — is the baseball cap he wears in all his matches. "Actually, for the last two years, I've only worn it when I play tennis," said Gerety. "I used to wear it all the time. "When I was younger, I used to play a little baseball and I guess it carried over. I'm really not sure why I wear it. "I go through quite a few hats." Gerety has also gone through quite a few matches at FSU as he ranks 10th on the Bulldogs' all-time victory list with 51 wins.. But Gerety likely won't be noted for thM when his career's over. He will prcbably be remembered for his spirit, his liveliness — and his spunk. Hall, Negley lead FSU cyclists Fresno State cyclists George Hall and Brian Negley finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the Category B criterium at UC Davis Saturday. Hall and Negley, who competed in a field of over 60 cyclists in the 21-mile race, were two of seven FSU racers to gain top 10 finishes. Glenn Imyke finished in the first 10 of the Category C criterium Saturday, Dave Chen grabbed 10th place in the first heat of Category C circuit race Sunday, and Brian Craven and Chris Compton, took seventh and eighth place, respectively, in the second heat of the Category C criterium. Cynthia Jeong, meanwhile, finished 10th in the circuit race, registering the first points scored by Fresno State in women's competition this year. The three top 10 finishes in Category C enabled FSU to record a season-high for points accumulated in the classification during one race. Fresno State's effort, though, was stymied as six of the 11 FSU competitors were involved in accidents. The FSU cyclists compeie al UC Santa Cruz Saturday and Sunday. Goodwin now has a total of 43 stolen bases on the season. Also having a big week for the 'Dogs was sophomore right fielder Steve Hosey, who is currenUy riding a 13- game hitting streak. In five games last week, Hosey had 13 hits, five doubles, two homers, and 10 RBI. Were it not for Shebelut, Hosey would be leading the 'Dogs in all of the major hitting categories, batting .380 with 10 home runs and 57 RBI. Second baseman Steve Pearse led the team last week hitting .583 with 12 RBI. With hitting numbers like that, you don't really need good pitching, but the Dog hurlers have come through nonetheless. Starters John Salles, Erik Schullstrom, and Rich Crane all pitched complete games against San Jose and com bined to hold the Spartans to five runs in the three-game series. Salles stayed undefeated at 10-0 with his 17-3 win on Friday. He needs only rwo more strikeouts to become the third Bulldog in history to record 300. Schullstrom ran his record to 8-1 with his victory Saturday and leads the PCAA with a 1.66 ERA. Crane won 7-1 on Sunday and leads the T)ogs in wins with a 12-1 mark. FSU, 37-6 on the year, will roll into Beiden tonight against a team they have already beaten once this season, the Mustangs of San Luis Obispo. The "Dogs defeated Cal Poly-SLO on February 17 at Beiden by a score of 6-1. Salles picked up the victory and struck out a career-high 15 batters. The Mustangs are 17-19 on the season. Tonight could be more of the same as Salles will again take the mound to seek his 1 lth win without a defeat. After tonight's contest the Dogs will travel to PCAA rival UC Santa Barbara for a three-game series starting Friday afternoon. UCSB is currenUy 2-7 in the PCAA and tied for sixth in the conference. Last season the Dogs met UCSB in five games and lost four.
