I went without sleep for the majority of last week in order to complete my voluminous homework assignments and clear the weekend for one of those infamous "roadtrips." The plan was to go to Candlestick Park for a Giants/Dodgers game on Friday night and then on to Sacramento to watch CSUF in an advertising campaigns competition on Saturday. It all seemed so simple, so harmless. If I had any idea of what lay ahead, I would have stayed home and watched wrist-wrestling on ESPN instead. The weather on Friday was threatening; showers fell off and on throughout the day in Fresno. I figured there might be a chance of rain in San Francisco, so early in the afternoon 1 tuned in a Bay Area radio station for a weather forecast. "Decreasing showers throughout the afternoon," said the weatherman. "It will be a dry one for the game at the 'Stick' tonight." Okay, I thought The Giants haven't had a home game rained out since 1983. There's no way that the game is going to be canceled. I got out of class at 2 p.m. and headed home. About 30 minutes later my friend and I were on the road. We stopped at my friend's place of employment to pick up his paycheck. Then I realized I forgot tbe map. We headed back to pick it up. We were still hoping to make it to San Francisco for the opening pitch at 7:30, but we had to stop off at a place on Shaw Avenue so that my friend could sell an ad for the Collegian. By the time the advertising deal was sealed, it was almost 4 p.m. Time was short, we'd have to make good time to get to the park in time for the game. My foot inched down on the gas pedal, and no sooner than I had reached a decent (well, maybe excessive) speed, I saw a motorcycle cop on a sidestreet, armed with his trusty radar gun. He had me, and I knew it. "Tell him we're trying to make it to the Giants game," my friend said "Hell let you go." But as the policeman walked to my car, I quickly noted his lesemblence to Robo- Cop, so I decided it was wise to say as little as possible. At least RoboCop was quick, obviously experienced at writing a ticket We were soon on our way, on Highway 99 by 4:15. The weather wasn't getting better as we made our way northwest. Rain fell here and there, but I took heart on the weatherman's prediction earlier in the day. I wasn't worried. It was still pouring when we reached Oakland; I was worried. Luckily, the rain stopped by the time we reached Candlestick, so we spent the $4 for a parking space and $2.50 each for General Admission seats. The national anthem was drawing to a close as we entered Candlestick, that cement Mecca. We bought ballpark hot dogs and popcorn, peanuts, drinks—we were.ready a etijoyJte-garne. -..;-, In rite lop of the first inning, the rain started to fall and it got progessively heavier, The grrjundscrew rolled out the Please see WOK, page 3 Reader Response to The Daily Collegian is welcome Please send letters of no more than 250 words to The Daily Collegian, Keats Campus Building California State University Fresno, Fresno, California 9374OO042. Where do these ill- informed writers come from and where have they been?! In response to weary Steven Kloose's letter, please note that I am an elected "major woman candidate" —so was Jessica Chrisman, Karen Caldwell, Robin Evans, Debbie Win- slow, Laura Guard, Patsey Foley and our most esteemed and influential A.V.P., Cyndi Martos. Take a breath and dive into the tremendous accomplishments of our CSSA representative, Bev Raines. While you're at it, check out the women's long record of service on the College Union Board. I dare you to ask Anna Gonzalez about her contribution to student government. As for your assumption that elections are won by money for media space. I can vouch for the fact that Karen, Laura and myself didn't spend mi ;i more than you'd spend for a week's worth of lunches. We skipped the lunches and actively campaigned by speaking directly with concerned students. Not one of our campaign fliers glittered. Did yoL think the red Marks-a-Lot was flashy? Why would anyone want a 24-hour library? Tell the students who requested it that it's an exciting and useless ide? As for your idea of reality, the copy m; .-fine problem was addressed and is being resolved, as you would have known if you'd attended a senate meeting or bothered 10 pick up a copy of the minutes which are always available in the AS office. It is not the responsibility of the senate to write about the minutes in the Collegian and I don't think the Collegian wants them in their Reader Response column. Challenge the reporters to provide more student government coverage of pertinent issues. If the activity of "argument" among us bothers you, consider the fact that their ability to discuss and disagree has led to significant accomplishment and improvement on your campus—it's called the democratic process. Sincerely, Bev McKenna, Cyndi Mattos, Sean Ford, etc. Weston feedback Dear Editor, In response to Cael Weston's editorial "AIDS misinformation in the 80s," let me congratulate The Daily Collegian. Once again your staff has proved its consistency in journalism. Yellow-rag, sensationalist journalism, that is. In contrast to A.
