News Wednesday, April 6,1988 Page 11 SENATE CROPS Continued from page l The proposal to grant the money despite the apparent policy violation was finally voted on and passed with only Gualco dissenting. The proposal also included a supination to send letters of reprimand to MEChA president Karen Cogley and the club's advisor, Robert Hernandez. In a separate action causing less debate, the senate voted unanimously to fill the vacant senator for the School of Natural Sciences seat with senior biology major Tim O'Hara. "I don't know much about the Associated Students, but I'm curious about what goes on," O'Hara told the seriate before the vote. O'Hara, planning to start his masters degree in biology next fall said the a seat on the senate would be the best place to "cut his teeth" since he eventually wished to attend law school. Senator James Lawrence, responsible for nominating O'Hara, said the new senator already knew many people within his department and would bring them as constituents to the Associated Students. AS President Mark Astone also endorsed O'Hara, saying the new senator had been persistent and patient in his bid lor a senate seat. LETTERS Continued from page 2 10th Street, my car, a silver Plymouth Champ, was totaled by a rear end collision. So what, right? Well, at the time, my car was parked, and the car that hit mine was traveling at a very excessive speed, pushing the rear bumper nearly to the front seat and carrying my car over 20 feet! The driver, who was reported as "PROBABLY DRUNK." then Red the scene, not even checking to see what they had done to me or my car. Now, what do 1 want? So far the police have a descripuon of the car (blue,'7O-'80, Firebird of CarnaroL,but no license plate number or driver's name. When the car left the scene, it had considerable front end damage—someone must know who this person is. If not for me, then lor the next victim who could very well lose their life, PLEASE, call the police and identify this person. Thank you, Felicia Chavez Vick responds I take it that Mr. Vincent's attack on the recent victory of the Reality '88 Party was sour grapes, so I'll leave it at thaL But, Ivan, I think you missed a point when you asserted that we weren't pro- minority groups. We are pro-student, not just minority, as you apparently would have it. Let's stop dividing students into special interest groups. Now is the time to focus our energies on issues that affect us all, not just M.E.Ch.A., not just the Gay and Lesbian Student Alliance. I am sorrv for you if you are so selfish as to only want to advance the interests of your own special interest- That is not, nor will it ever be be my policy as student body president. I do not believe that the United Farm Workers dealings is in any way a part of student government- It is part of local, state and national politics. As for my personal stand on the United Farm Workers, Ivan, I believe their actions are counterproductive and needlessly put farmers out of work. I believe that they should pursue more diplomatic means. Scott Vick The Daily Collegian Founded in 1922 Continued from page 1 Posing an ethical question of the situation to Barbara Westerfield of the S.P.C.A., she said: "We would tike to see the most humane way of dealing with it. "What's best for animals is usually pretty costly to humans," she said. Westerfield also said that the SP.C.A. has no jurisdiction on state property unless animal cruelty is involved. However, she did express an interest as to whether or not alternative means to hunting had been considered. Dr. Hewitt said that hunting is only an occasional event and that alternate means have been tried. A non-lethal device called a Zon-gun is used as a means of reinforcing the hunting by scaring the crows away. The cylinder-shaped Zon-gun is filled with propane and ignited by a spark. A megaphone is attached to the barrel and produces a sound similar to a shotgun. But Hewitt said that the Zon-gun has only limited use because the crows realize that it isn't lethal, and they Filter back into the grove located on Chestnut at the north end of the campus. Trapping, poison and hunting dogs have also been considered to control both the crows and rabbits. Trapping is considered to be inefficient and the gre y hounds that have been used to hunt tbe rabbits didn't do the job. The use of poison was rejected because it is indiscriminate and is strictly controlled by the Fish and Wildlife I>;partrnenL Hunting is the most effective means of control, but it interferes with other campus activities. Ll Steve King of the CSUF police department said that the wildlife hunt is a very low priority since it takes manpower away from more important pursuits such as traffic control. Why not turn it over to the agricultural department? "We'd love to let them do it," said King. "They would probably do a better job." However, university policy dictates that the use of firearms be restricted to the campus police. This policy places pressure on the agriculture department to come up with other alternate non-lethal methods of controlling the crows. In response to that pressure, a new type of Zon-gun, priced al $400, will soon be tested. The new gun shoots a crow look-alik? into the air as well as emitting the sound of a shotgun. The look-alike is designed to resemble a dying crow as it flutters to the earth. According to Hewia, however, the depredation control program is a losing battle. "All of our efforts are not working," said Hewitt. "The flock is larger than ever." But be also said that if they are left unchecked, the crows could reduce the crop by as much as one-third, eliminating expected profits. After being asked about the future of CSUF almonds, Hewitt responded: "We may have to get out of the almond business." For the Record...
