Delta Sigma Pi has signed a contract with the Department of TransportaUon in Fresno volunteering to pick up trash for two years. The area ihey have adopted is Freeway 41 from Bullard Avenue to Friant Road since all segments adopted must be at least two miles long, according to Wlllems. California's Adopt-A-Highway program is a by-product of a plan that originated in Texas, said Derjek Hill, a student assistant for California's transportation department "Legislators in Texas came up with this Idea to 'clean up America' and chal¬ lenged other states todo the same," said Bill Binger, Caltrans deputy and district director of maintenance. The goal of Caltrans is to have at least 600 Adopt-A-Highway groups enlisted by March 31, 1990 to participate in the Great American Trash-Off. Twenty-four states have joined the program and six¬ teen are in the process of Joining." he The program is funded by the state's litter control fund, and it Is a naUon - wide project that centers on cleaning up the slopes and off-ramps Of our high¬ ways. Delta Sigma Pi will save taxpayers dollars. "It cost the city of Fresno $25,000 annually just to clean the litter on the side of the road, and with the service provided by the Delta Sigma Pi Frater¬ nity, we'll only have to pay fiw-the cost of equipment," Binger said. ^—^ The city moves at least 240.000 tons of trash per year and they usually have to pay maintenance crews to clean the highways, or Fresno city probaUoners expend $25,000,000 annually to allow offenders to clean the highways, said Robert Scott, a maintenance crewman. Brian Martin, president of the frater¬ nity, said that everyone was willing and excited to help out "A friend of the fraternity works for Caltrans and suggested mat we partici¬ pate in the Adopt-A-Highway program.
