In light of cirrjumstances that led to last spring's sit-in and the subsequent trial of three CSUF students, including the numerous acts of vandalism targeted specifically at women, people ofcolor, lesbians and gays throughout the year at CSUF, the staffofLa Voz rfeAzr/dn feel it is in the best interest of aU students to endorse the following candidates who will do the best job. . _ T In keeping with the ideals of truth, fairness and the constant stuggle for equality and justice for all oppressed people^ La Voz de Aztldn endorses the following: —\ r_ ASI President Don Daves Unity-SRG Legislative Vice President Stacey Green Unity-SRG _ ■ . | Experience: Chair Unity-SRG, vice chair Tewaquachi, former chair of elec¬ tion committee. I also helped found the University Democrats and am currently working to establish a multi-cultural joint council. Concerns: My two primary concerns at this time are safety on campus which includes expanded escort services, more, emergency phones and more effective lighting. I would also iiketoseetheexpan- sion of facilities and more permanent classroom space for the students and not for the administration or the community. Experience: I have been active in the Finance and Budget committee, per¬ sonnel committee and the Legal and Legislative committee. I lobbyied for Educational Equity on CSU campus as a member of California Statewide Student Association (CSSA). I have been a mem¬ ber ofthe African American Student Alli¬ ance, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, NAACP Students for the Common Good and Women's Alliance. Concerns: I want to help complete development oh a campus women's cen¬ ter. While women seem to be the majority on thiscam pus, there are nosuch services available. CSUF must take a strong turn toward multi-cultural education. Admin. Vice President Irma Serrano Ifoity'-SRG Experience.I have been involved with the Chicano Youth Conference for three years and served as chairwoman for the last two years. I have also been involved with MEChA for three years, its High School Outreach Committee and Students For The Common Good. Concerns: There is a need to address the continual oppression of underrpre- sented student groups by the adminis- trtion. Policies that attack and under¬ mine people ofcolor, disabled students, women, lesbians and gays have no busi- nesson this campus. This university must become an equitable institution that will Senator-At-Large Post #S Terry Gipson Unity-SRG Senate-At-barge Post #3 Salvador Cuevas Unity-SRG Experience: My involvement with ASI has been very little because I am a Freshman, but I am aware and observing the political atmoshpere of thiscampus. I was involved in Student Government in High School for four years and I feel I can represent the needs ofthe students here at CSUF. Concerns: The tuition fee hike, re¬ cruitment of minorities and racial equity within the dorms. The need for a condu¬ cive atmoshpere for people ofcolor. Experience: I was a member of the Valley Civic'Center (Brawley, Calif.) I have taught English as a Second Lan¬ guage and given classes on becoming a U.S. citizen. 1 have been involved in a numerous amount of fundraising efforts as a member ofthe Agriculture Club at Imperial Valley College. I was a student advisor for MEChA Concerns: I wanttoaddress financial aid cutbacks. I would also like to increase AIDS awareness and address racism, sexism and homophobia. I think there needs to be pressure on the administra¬ tion to advance multicultural curriculum. Senator .-At-large #2 Genoveya Islas Unity-SRG Experiencer Currently, I am presi¬ dent of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. I am also currently the student representative to the Academic Affairs Committee. I am chairwoman ofthe High School Outreach subcom m i ttee of ME Ch A. Concerns: My first concern is tomake CSUF the most conductive environment possible for college students whether it be combating fee hikes or promoting ethnic events. I would also like to see the success of student research facilities proposed by Chicanoand Latin American Studies and African-American Studies programs. ttudenii for Seiponitbl* Government COALITION USU Board #1 Andres Montaya Unity-SRG Experience: I am currently ASIsena- tor for the School of Social Sciences. I am also on the Finance and Budget and the Personnel committees. Concerns: Tuition cost must not"in- cfease. The financial aid process must be made easier and there must an increase in randingfor minority recruitment . ■
