Page 4 Friday, March 9, 1990 The Daily Collegian Town Cryers impressive on LP By Todd Heth Staff Writer In Fresno, it is hard to make any accompbshmentsasarockband. There are hassles with club owners, recording studios, record stores and radio sta¬ tions. And ultimately they have to try and muster an audience and hope to get a good reception. However, the Town Cryers have man¬ aged to successfully handle all of these aspects of making It as a band, and as a result their two and a half years together have finally yielded a full length album. Infectious, eclectic, poignant, and definitely retro are words that aptly describe this release titled 'In the Cool Part of Town.' The album embodies elements of the avant-garde of the mid-sixties folk pop with a little of the garage tinged rock of the eighties. There is nothing terribly intricate or overly complex about It, but that becomes one of its strengths. The first cut on the album was prevl- oushy released as a slngleon their record' label Get Hip. 'Girl with the Blue Sweater." which has become a regular song on KFSR. is reminiscent of any Byrds song. Also "We See People" can't escape comparison of that leading six¬ ties folk pop group. Notoniylsthemusic similar, but the lyrics draw on observa¬ tions of society Just as the Byrds did. Both are melodious tunes that draw on a 12 string electric guitar sound effectively. "In the Cool Part of Town" was mostly recorded In Fresno and produced by Roger Perry, who has gained quite a bit of popularity in Fresno in the blues based bands the Mockers. Pleasure Gap and Money, Gun, and Car. The produc- David TeWezJDaily Collegian Performing at The Bucket Thursday night, lead singer Craig Sullivan andguitarist Michael Scott ofthe Town Cryers performed songs from their debut album. "In the Cool Part of Town." >. tion Is of good quality and the fact that the album is being put out on compact disc speaks for itself. "Tell Me You Won't Go Away", Today She Loves Me (Tomorrow She Won't)" and "I'm Staying Home." all deal with relationships and the wonder they can bring. But instead of only dealing with that, other songs deal with various subjects. "Windows and'Cracks" is an almost heartland type rock song that talks abouthow people only see the outside of popular figures and think they know them. "Nightmare Beyond Ventura" Is a smoothly intriguing song that reflects its title. "We See People" questions the middle class ethic of having to move up in society. Italsodescribesthedilemmaof seeing people that are down and out, but not knowing how to help them. "For Your Love" is.a song that was originally a hit for the Yardbirds In the mid-sixties and this version very much does Justice to it. It along with several other songs incorporates a sixties Vox organ into the background. Also the background vocals effectively supportleadslngerCraigSullivan, whose voice inflections sometimes sound like that of Michael Stipe of REM. "Sometimes" Is a very poppish song that draws comparisons to the original version of the song "Venus" by Shocking Blue. The guitar work by Michael Scott is never overbearing like much of today's music Is. Along with the thundering drumming of Kevin McHatten and the addictive bass lines of David Oulashian. Scott puts his two cents worth insubtly. The only downside ofthe guitar tracks is that on a few songs the technical sound is a litQe muddy. Coupled with harmony vocals that slip out of tune a couple times, there's a little flaw in this diamond, but it can't be seen without magnifying IL The Town Cryers will be having a record release parry to celebrate their work at the Olympic Tavern on the 23rd. and shortly will be heading down to Los Angeles to play a few shows. With the album heading out before them to myri¬ ads of college radio stations, theyshould get Just as good a reception as they did in Fresno, and with this album, they deserve It.
