Cunnmgliam yesterday calleda 4 p.rn. news conference, where he informed members of- the local media of his deci¬ sion to release the fourth-year coach. "Ron Adams' contract will not be re¬ newed and Ron feels It Is in his best Interest to step down Immediately from coaching the team," Cunningham said In a prepared statement ]f "(Assistants) Don Beck and Frank Car- bajal have been appointed interim co- head coaches for the restof the season. I will immediately begin a nationwide search for our next basketball coach at Fresno State University." The 42-year-old Selma native took over the Bulldog program In March of 1986 after eight seasons as an assistant under both Ed Gregory and Boyd Grant. He compiled respective records of 9-20. 9-19 and 15-14 in each of the past three seasons. A substantial improvement in 1989- 90 was expected, primarily based on a highly-touted recruiting class projected to help boost the program to a higher level. I feel that Ron will land on his feet and I think there are good things ahead for Ron, but our program needs a change in direction and that's why the de¬ cision was made. -Gary Cunningham However, after a strong start with rare non-conference road wins at McNeese State and Kansas State, the squad has fallentoa9-16overallrecordanda4-12 Big West slate, tted with San Jose State and Just ahead of last-place UC Irvine. Adams was not available for comment and Cunningham didn't know whether or not he would be anytime soon. "I can't answer for (Adams)." Cun¬ ningham said. "I don't know. I asked Ron if he wanted to make a statement, and Ron said he did not want to make a statement Whether he will be talking to the press or not I don't know." Cunningham said Adams needed to know that his contract would not be renewed in order to take the pressure off of everyone involved. He also gave Adams . a chance to resign, but said he did not tell Adams what to do. "I met with the team (today). Rajki's lecture centered around the troubles that this switch In economies will present and the different proposed solutions. Hungary has been a part ofthe dramatic changes in the Soviet bloc countries. Communist leader Janos Kadar was ousted last year and for the first time in 40 years, the countrywlll have free elections March 25th. As a professor In Hungary. Raj kl said hewas predict¬ ing the economy would fall apart 10 years ago. "Inourhearts.wesomehowcountedonthls lOyears ago because we knew mismanagement couldn't con¬ tinue." he said. "Most Communist Party members did not believe In communist ideals, but Instead wanted to further their career, because outside ofthe party there was no political career." According to Rajki. the standard of living was de¬ creasing while the Inflation was increasing. "SOpercent of the fuel energy in Hungary is exported to the Soviet Union in exchange for refined goods. It's got to stop."
