UCLA beats FSU in showdown twice

K should have been called the
FSU / UCLA Showdown.
Number one-ranked University of
California; "Los Angeles justified its
ranking by sweeping Coach Margie
Wright's second-ranked Bulldogs in
two games at the Big West/Pac 10
Showdown tournament at Fullerton
over the weekend.
The last time the teams met was in
last season's NCAA. Championship
game, when UCLA scratched out a
victory over Fresno State for the
second consecutive year. Since UCLA
and FSU. have no other games
scheduled for this season, the lop two
ranked teams in Ihecounlry may not
meet again until this year's NCAA
playoffs.
The Bulldogs got a chance for
redemption yesterday in a rematch
with the Bruins, but shaky early
pitching and defensive miscues
contributed to the 5-1 loss.
No sooner had pinch-runner Dina
Lopez scored FSU's first run In the top
of the second. UCLA responded with
two of its own in the bottom of the
innfrig. Missy Phillips singled, was
sacrificed to second and scored on
Kerry Dienett's stand-up double.
Dienelt, In turn, scored on Martha
NofTsinger's throwing error with two
outs.

sacrificed to third and scored on
Yvonne Gutierrez' RBI single.
Gutierrez scored on a 3-ball 2-strike
home run blast oil the bat of Missy
Phillips that sounded the death knell
for freshman starter Marcte Green,
who was lifted tn favor of Carpenter.
Wfale the the Bruins moved with
relative ease around the bases, the
Bulldogs stranded runners after the
second inning.
The closest the Bulldogs came was In
the third when Julie Smith led off
with a single. Martha Noffslpger
safely bunteo and RaeAnn Pifferini
sacrificed to give FSU runners at
second and third with one out,
They came up empty-handed,
however, when Gina LoPiccolo struck
out and Kerri Donls popped up to end
the Inning.
UCLA's Lisa Longaker scattered
eight hits, while FSU's Green gave up
five runs and seven hits tn two and one-
third Innings. In relief, Carpenter
gave up a hit and recorded a strikeouL
Saturday. UCLA's Heather Compton
gave up only one run and five hits to
lead the Bruins over FSU 2-1 in the
first of their two meetings. Carpenter

Senior Carle Dever chalked up nine
strikeouts and one walk for FSU in the
routofASU. Amber Tlntsman gave up
13 Bulldog hits in the loss to the Sun
Devils.
The Bulldogs closed out the
tournament against fifth-ranked
Oregon with an easy 8.-0 victory. Dever
had seven strikeouts and gave up a
walk while the Ducks" first-team All-
American last year, Katie Weiss, was
tagged for 14 hits. Senior shortstop
Martha Noffsinger led FSU, going 4-4
with two runs and an RBI
Senior first baseman Donls (7 for
13. two RBIs) and Junior second
baseman Smith (6 forl6) were named
to the all ■ Ion ma men (team.
The next game for the Bulldogs will
be when they host Sacramento State
in a 1 p. Sunday doubieheader at
Bulldog Diamond.
