r\ The Daily Collegian Tuesday, December 5,198 Page 7 Softball 'Dog Pifferini cleared for practice Collegian Sports Staff Her career hung in the balance of her recovery from a scary injury last spring, but FSU softball standout RaeAnn Pifferini has been given full medical clearance to participate in the Bulldogs' daily practices. The 5-8 junior outfielder from Scotts Valley, an All-Big West and All-West region first team selection In 1989, was on a record-setting pace last spring before suffering a concussion at home plate in a May 5 game at Bulldog Diamond against Nevada-Las Vegas. She had been practicing on ■ a limited basis until receiving her full release by Dr. Tom Thaxter. FSU team physician, and neurologist Dr. Brian Clague. Her condition will continue to be monitered and her game status will not be determined untilalaterdatc. Pifferini collided with Rebel catcher Sheree Comiel while sliding head-first into the plate. She missed the (earns final 10 games alter bcin£ hospitalized with tile concussion. including all seven postseason games. Prior to the injury. Pifferini extended her hitting streak to a school-record 14 games, in which she was batting .462 with 25 hits in 54 at-bats. "I feel good now and I'm glad they finally cleared me." said Pifferini, who was an All-College World Series selection as a freshman. "I've been feeling alright, since after I got over that hill. I think with all the rest and a lot of praying. I've gotten better quicker than they might have expected." She finished last season ranked second on the team in hits (76). runs (42) and batting average (.330). In career statistics, she is third in batting average (.312. 121-for-387). ninth in runs (62). 12th inJiits (121) and 1 Oth in stolen bases (14). Fifth-year FSU softball coach Margie Wright is also glad lo have Pifferini back. "I fhink it is a bii; mental boost for her" she said. The run kicks off the week's activities prior to Saturday's California Raisin Bowl football game between FSU and Mid-American Conference champion Bali State. FSU" student Ernie Freer battled Bulldog runner Jason Lienau for the two-mile run win. Freer broke his own course record as he nipped Lineau at the tape with a time of 9:01. his third victory in three years at the Cal Bowl. Lineau. a former Cal Bowl 10K winner, was right behind Freer at 9:02. Bulldog cross country runners Jamey Harris. Rod Heskett and' Gilbert Delgado followed Lineau down the chute. The top -woman two-miler was Bulldog runner Shannon Lieder. who finished at 11:32. Winner of the 1 OK run for the 10th time in the 10-race series was three- time Runner of the Year Al Lara. Lara, a 32-year-old Kresnan, finished at 30:03. FSU runner David Naranjo .finished second behind Laraat31:2S. Top women finishers were former FSU cross country standout Stacey MrAfee. first at 35:55, and Janine Ogas. second at 36:40. McAfee ended Ogas' three-year reign in the event FSU junior runner Cindy Rockwood followed Ogas with a time of37:28. Other FSU students who ran in the 10K included 1989 Bass Lake Triathlon winner and graduate student Jeff Moffit. Fred Frausto, Kurt Smoot, Jon Morse. Jim Crossbuck and Grant Hasson.
