Dougherty was trying to avenge the mistake heNhad made earlier that had led to Santa Clara's first goal. As Dougherty took his place at the goal line, the crowd was going crazy, sensing that this goal would give the team an Insurmountable two-goal lead with 37 minutes left to play. Rast struck the kick to Dougherty's left, but he didn't get lt as far left as he wanted to. Dougherty had guessed correctly and put his hands on the ball, but the shot was so hard that all the goalie could do was slow lt down, and the ball bounced off of Dougherty's chest and Into the net It was after that goal that FSU went to work. The Bulldogs launched a furious assault that culminated with Ricky Villa's goal less than two minutes later. Villa was the first to a loose ball In front of the Broncos net, and slammed lt home to silence the frenzied crowd and put the 'Dogs back In it. Santa Clara goalie Eric Yamamoto, who carried a 0.36 goals against average Into the game, appeared to be shocked and frustrated at the goal, but the pressure was Just beginning. - First, there was the outstanding pass by Bulldog Robert Bent to Vlnce Martinez that left Martinez one-on- one with Yamamoto. Martinez's shot was wide of the left post by about a foot and the fans seemed to be buzzing about what lay ahead. The best Fresno scoring chance, and perhaps the most exciting play of the game, included a shot by Gerell "Bones" Elliott that hit the far post and rebounded back into play and Tim Martin shot the carom, which was going to be collected by Yamamoto, but FSU forward Karl Ingeman knocked the ball away from the goalie and kicked the volley into the net The referee took away the goal, ruling that Ingeman obstructed Yamamoto. That was the Bulldogs' last drive for a goal. Elgorriaga summed up the game for the Bulldogs. "We were good enough to scare them," said Elgorriaga.
