r Page2 Monday, November 13,1989 \/ The Daily Collegian Opinions _ Bible translation not perverted Dear Editor, The theological 'and historical distortions recently presented in your columns by Bill Stout need to be addressed. Don't turn the Good News into Bad News. BUI. You state that the Good News Bible "Is based on the Masoretic Text..in sharp contrast to the King James Version which is based...on that of William (Tyndale, who was burned at the stake for willfully perverting' the meaning ofthe scriptures." 1 .dc- not promote one translation of the Bible over another. The perfect translation of the Bible does not — and never will — exist I agree that the King James Version contains errors in translation. I quote from It because I believe it is the most accurate version available to us In English. You disagree with me In this and It is quite fine that you do so. But your facts are wrong. The Old Testament of the KJV is. contrary to your understanding based on the Masoretic text the New Testament of the KJV is based on the Textus Receptus. This text -has been widely accepted by scholars for centuries and is the text upon which the New Testament has been based for the Waldenses. theAlblgenses, the Greek Orthodox Church, Luther's German Bible, Olivetan's French Bible, the Geneva Bible and - among others. It Just so happens- WilliamTyndale'sBible. wllllam Tyndale was the flrst person to translate the Bible Into English from the original Greek and Hebrew. Because of this his Incomplete version, did have considerable influence over the wording of the KJV. published in 1611,75 years after his execution. The question becomes whether this wording accurately reflects the original manuscripts. Most scholars during the past four centuries believe it does. Tyndale was not put to death for "wtUtully perverting" the meaning of the scriptures although he was accused of this. He was put to death because he translated the Bible into English. The powers that existed in his day were afraid of the impact that this book would have on people if translated Into everyday languages. Tyndale was a hero who died so that we can read the Bible today in our native language. Without the sacrifice of people such as him there would be neither KJV nor the Good News Bible. He died so that people such as you and I can be enlightened by the truth. If you prefer the Good News Bible rather than the - KJV t have no problem with that What I do have a problem with is your continued and mpiCROUS ALLEGATION THAT UNPSR PLP TESTAMENT LAW WOMEN ARE FORCED TO MARRY MEN THAT RAPE THEM! You take an error in the translation of an esoteric verse In the Bible, quote It out of context mutilate historical facts and claim to present the truth of our Judeo-Christian ethic. You distort history, theology and common sense with this nonsense. You offend the decency that Christianity stands for. YOU EELJTJLE IHE serious and PERVASIVS^»ROBLEM OF VIOLENT RAPE. Can you name one responsible Christian who has ever lived anywhere at anytime who agrees with you In this? What you are saying Is ridiculous and absurd. If people were executed today for "willfully perverting" the meaning ^f scriptures (as you wrongfully claim William Tyndale was) then you would no longer be with us, BUI. Sincerely.
