Spencer, entering his ninth year at FSU, guided the Bulldogs to an 18-12 record last year. Women cagers display fresh look Led by Bento and Srubek, FSU aims for another winning season under Spencer By Darrin Jones Sports Writer Gaining his eighth consecutive winning season may be a tough task for head women's '^basketball coach Bob Spencer, with the addition of five newcomers to the program. Spencer, who Is entering his ninth year at Fresno State, has ported winning seasons in each bf his nine years, including last year's record of 18-12. Spencer Is the NCAA's second all-time winningest coach. His biggest task will be overcoming the loss of Yvette Roberts, FSU's leading scorer (19.8 ppg) and rebounder (10.2 rpg). Roberts was named FSU's Female Athlete of the Year for 1988-89, and was also a three- time All Big West selection at forward. Also, the Lady 'Dogs will fieM a 12-playei team that has only seven returnees. The team will consist of three freshmen and their progress could help to offset the loss of Roberts. "No one person will be able to replace Yvette - Roberts and everything that she has done in the past three year>," said Spencer. "We do feel that maybe two or three people will be able to pick up the slack. In particular, we are going to rely heavily on Simone Srubek." Srubek. one of two returning starters from last year's squad, will need to dominate as she did In the latter parts of last season. Her ability to do so will afcjo depend on the developement of the younger players, said Spencer. Here is an overview of the projected starters and reserves: Center: Srubek, a 6-6 senior, enjoyed a good season tn 1988-89. as she was the second-leading ■scorer and rebounder (13 ppg, 8.2 rpg). She also earned AU-Blg West Conference honorable mention and finished fourth nationally in blocked shots with 4.3 per game. But these figures were with Roberts playing along side and Srubek will have to prove that she can carry the burden of scorer /rebounder without Roberts. Power forward: Sophomore Stacey Cornaggla has the early edge at this position. The 6-3 Cornaggla earned a starting position late in the season last year and posted Individual-game highs of 16 points and 10 rebounds against Nevada-Reno. She averaged 3.5 ppg and 4.1 rpgin; her freshman year and Is expected to Improve on those numbers with Increased playing time. Also returning Is Dawn Stewart- a 6-0 sophomore reserve from last year's team who saw action in 23 games. Stewart has been hampered by knee Injuries, but Spencer said she has showed Improvement in the last few practices. Wing/Small forward: Depending upon the personnel used, Spencer will employ a three- guard offense or the more traditional two- forward set. Yannlck Souvre, a sophomore transfer student from France, has the nod at wing two weeks Into practice.
