o California State Univereity^sno \ Bulldog Sports Wednesday, October 18,1989 Adams sees boost for FSU hoops Fourth-year coach looks to improve upon 15-14 record with a diverse blend of talent ByEricBurney Sports Editor Sunday's opening practice marked the official beginning of the 1989-90 Fresno State men's basketball season and, though the Bulldogs don't meet their first opponent until mid- November, a new look Is clearly evident throughout the lineup. FSU lost six lettermen (three starters), including 6-6 all-conference forward Jerois Cole, from last year's 15-14 squad. The Bulldogs finished seventh in the Big West Conference wltha9-9 record. Fourth-year head coach Ron Adams shares his early thoughts and projections concerning this season's team, which sees its first game action in a Nov. 16 exhibition with Nosso Club. Brazil at Selland Arena. Q. This could be a pivotal season for you. You- have a lot of newcomers, a strong recruiting class and a tough schedule. Based on this, the players you have returning and the possiblity of your players gelling throughout the season, what are you going to have to do to Improve on your record? A. Well, we're going to have lo start. obviously, where we left off last year and just put a solid team on the floor eariy on. We will do that Just as we always have and that is trying to build a good team offense and really stressing defense also,, fielding the best defensive team that we can. Our schedule to an extremely tough one early and it doesnt give us any room for error, and that's good and it's bad. But, hopefully we can come out of It okay and hopefully have a team that's ready to gel by tournament time. 9- rm sure you were banking on (seven-abater) Peter Martin (a Junior college recruit who recently quit the team) contributing heavily and now that he's not here, you have to go on to another plan. Do you have a set front line or are you going to work with players until you find out who works well with one another? A. With or without Peter Martin, we had about seven candidates for our two Inside positions. I think a little bit of the misconception to that Peter Martin was everything and. as far as our front line goes, I think Peter Martin was especially Important to us In the early part of the season because (6-6 junior transfer from DePaul) Chris Henderson Isn't eligible until after the flrst Ave games. I think (Henderson's) a player who will Mrtalnly help us when he becomes eligible. So, we still have seven candidates for the Inside positions. I think we're going to find three or four of those people who are going to be solid players for us and the biggest f D*vM TltozJDtfyCotogiar Head basketball coach Ron Adams works with sophomore shootuigguaid Wilbert Hooker, one of FSU's twe -eturnlnfc starters, in Monday's practice. obstacle we have there Is simply our Inexperience. We have no one In those spots who has played a lot for Fresno State or has played a minute for Fresno State. Q. How are last year's contrtbuters going to fit In on the team; the starting backcourt (senior point guard BIJou Baly and sophomore-shooting guard Wilbert Hooker), players like (senior forward) Todd Peeble» and (sophomore forward) Pat Rlddlesprigger- how are mey going to fit in with this year's edition? I think we'll have more competition at the point spot (with Fresno CC transfer Dave Barnett and Seattle- bred freshman Steve Taylor) , so a lot of our success will come from what our new people do because we feel, without kidding ourselves, that we have had a really solid recruiting year. I expect a number of our new people to really contribute heavily to this team. 9. Tell me about your freshman recruits. A. Steve Tay'or (from Seattk'B Franklin H.S.) was one of the better point guards in the -western U.S. last year. We have Dimitri Lambrecht from Holy Cross High School In New York, a 6-10 center who we think is*1 going to be a real fine player for Fresno State. Guess what...who cares? *, I thinkit's safe to say that the average Red Waver, save for one In the commercial art or fashion design profession, really wouldn't mind a whole hell of a lot if this wonderful new piece of creativity were bathed in beige, puke green and purple polka dots (actually, that doesnt sound too repulsive), as long as the'Dogs are a part of It. This is honestly not a knock on the promotions and marketing people who orchestrate such endeavors. Being an artistic type myself and having worked with some very talented people in that medium, I can fully appreciate their efforts. But, please, does It have to be officially released to the media? Is it really that major? Other than people like me who find this whole thing amusing enough to waste space with, who do they really expect to use such earth- shattering news? • A simple exercise In deduction this December would almost surely result tn the realization that, yes, both the field and stadium are adorned by a bright, new logo. Neat-o. Then, you sit back, sip your beer and -wait the kickoff. However trivial, those without lives can rest even easier knowing that the C al lfornia Raisin Bowl Is sufficiently logoed.
