Art steps out Project moves from confines of gallery By Anastasla Hendrix Staff Writer Moat people are used to going to a gallery to Indulge in art exhibits. But on Monday afternoon the art came outdoors to the people, so that all they had to do In order to enjoy the art, was stop and observe. And by doing so, the people became a part ofthe art Or, at least that was the goal of CSUF graduate artist Cheryl Kershaw. This type of art Is called perfonnance art, which she defined as taking up time and space, on a progression that takes place within a given time frame. Those who came expecting an actual performance by the usual definition didn't get what they expected. "I kind of set up the absence of a performance so that the people became the performers of the piece themselves." Kershaw said. Her objective In the seemingly backward description was to let the viewers set up the acUon by walking through the art piece and creating their own Interpretations. Kershaw held the performance in three Intervals. The art project was moved across campus In ' progressions, starting in the free speech area and closing In the courtyard ofthe Con ley Art Building. The untitled project was created for an upper-dtvislon seminar class in which students develop their works of art and present them to be critiqued by the professor and other students. One of the three pieces consisted of a ladder with sheet metal descending from the top, taking on the appearance of a slide. with photographs placed on the upward surface. The other pieces created the appearance of a teeter-totter, an innertube with laminated photographs hanging through the hole, and two single photographs attached to the trunk of a nearby tree. All the pictures had Kershaw's feet In them, from different angles and perspectrlves, allowing her "to look at herself from the outside." Distributed between those photographs were different media images such as cartoon frames, photostats and book pages. "I'm not sure when the performance actually began and ended." Kershaw said, explaining that the process of setting up and taking down the art was part of the creation itself. Although Kershaw Is still experimenting with the display technique, she was pleasantly suprised with the observations and results. One observation she made was of the reaction that students had in the different areas of the campus. In the free speech area students tended to keep walking only occasionally glancing at the unknown addition to their surroundings. Around the art building students gathered and observed for minutes at a time — wandering around the pieces, recording the event and just generally absorbing. "It was less threatening and relaxed the nearer we got to the art building." she said. Kershaw, who is a full-time art student at CSUF. began working on the project at the beginning of the semsester and plans more projects experimenting with the performance forum. - CekBrate Jour faith at St. tPaufftjezi/man Center We are a Catholic university parish serving students, faculty and staff at CSUF.
