Page 4 Monday, October 2,1989 The Daily Collegian Novelist opens series By Jennifer Wh: teley StaffWriter She was bom in South America to diplomat parents, raised as a teenager in Bolivia, the Middle East and Europe, then returned to Chile from a war-tom Lebanon. From secretary to journalist, television show host to playwright, Isabel Allende had to flee her home yet again after her uncle. President Salvador Allende. was assassinated during a military coup in 1973. Unable to find a Job as a Journalist In her newly adopted home of Venezuela, she was not defeated. Instead, she turned her hand to writing fiction and wrote a best- selling novel called. The House of Spirits." She has since written two more novels that have had equal success. Allende is scheduled to speak Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Satellite Student Union. She will be the first of six speakers sponsored by the CSUF University Lecture Series this fall. She will lecture on "Political Turmoil and Everyday Stories." In a 1985 Newsweek Interview, Allende said, "Storytelling is a way of preserving the memory of the past and keeping alive legends, myths, superstitions and history that are not in textbooks - the real stories of the people and countries." Allende is one of the first female novelists to break into the male club of Uitin American novelists. Her work parallels that of male authors who depict the sociological conditions of their country. The New York Times compared "Spirits" to the Nobel prize-winning Gabriel Garcia Marquez novel, "One Hundred Years of Solitude." AHende's novel has also been translated Into over 22 different languages. In an Interview with People magazine, also in 1985, Allende said she began her first book as a letter to her grandfather, who was nearjy 100 years old. "My grandfather thought people died only when you forgot them." she said. Allende took this to heart and immortalized her grandfather as the central character of her book. Much of her life was spent with her grandparents. She described her grandfather as tyrannical and her grandmother as a spiritualist who held seances in her home. These childhood experiences are reflected in her novel, which was described by People magazine as "powerful, sometimes picaresque, sometimes mystical." Her two recent novels, "Of Love and Shadows" and "Eva Luna," are receiving critical acclaim as well. ■ Allende said she gets seven invitations a week to lecture. Tickets are available at the University Student Union Information Desk or at the Satellite Student Union the evening of the lecture. Tickets are $2 for students, faculty and staff and $3 for the general public. REPORTERS WANTED Trie Collegian Is looking for full-time reporters.
