California State University, Fresno Bulldog Sports Wednesday, October 11,1989 Dougherty — FSU's saving grace Senior goalkeeper relishes his role and career as a 'Dog, dreams of national title By Chris Branam SportsWriter One of the most exciting plays tn soccer la a diving save by the goalkeeper to take an apparent score away from the other team. A sight such as this Is common at Fresno State soccer games with All- American goalie candidate Mark Dougherty. Dougherty has the chance to be only the fourth All-American in Fresno State's soccer history. "It (All-American status) is something you always dream about." said Dougherty, "and IVe had a good career here. It would really be icing on the cake for me. " The only Bulldog goalie All- American is Kirk Shermer (1981). Dougherty has erased virtually all of Shermer's records In less than four years. Dougherty holds the career mark of 33. shattering Shermer's record of 22. Dougherty also has the lowest career goals gainst average- 0.67. He needs 100 more saves to tie Shermer's record of 318 for a career. , Even with all of his individual honors and records, one thing has / eluded Dougherty and his teammates: a national championship. I'd relly like to have a national championship," Mark admits. "That is the ultimate goal for me, above any personal goals. I'd rather have a team achievement of that caliber than individual honors." Mark also likes to spread the credit for the shutouts. "I have to give credit where credit is due," he saidT "IVe played with some good teams here at Fresno State, and a lot of those shutouts aren't me making 10 saves a game. Some of those shutouts, 1 didn't have to do anything for." Dougherty took over tn goal in 1986. when he replaced the immensely popular and successful Chato Elgorriaga-- It didn't take long for Mark to prove that he was a speclalyplayer. registering 10 shutouts as a .redshirt freshman. Those 10 shutouts In one season is an FSU record, which he equaled last year. Dougherty explained that his transition to starter in 1986 was made easier by the coaches. "1 tried not to put too much pressure on myself." Mark said, "and the coaches understood that they couldn't dump all this pressure on me. 1 was real fortunate to play with the quality players JJiat I played with when I was a freshman. I think it has something to do with the fact that it wasn't packaged in an ever-popular, generic, white, business-size envelopes; it was i beige-- It had character, not to mention a funky name above Its return address...Basketball's Basement. 1 could dig that. (Note: Editing a dailynewspapersection really serves no immediate purpose - elsewhere, so simple pleasures like trderesttngmaatendtobrighlmalffefess day. causing said editor to ramble incessantly. Humorme J Turns out this Seattle-based publication Is a weekly column (transmitted by Fax) dedicated to humorously exploring the nation's worst collegiate and professional basketball teams. This isnt an entirely new concept; IVe seen similar angles taken by popular sporting magazines and even Playboy ("The Bottom Ten" for football), but IVe never come across an entire publication with this sole purpose. I think it could fry. I mean, think about it. Hr~w many times have you, the hoops fan, sat around with you r buddies, rationalizing the display of patheUcism exhibited by cert aln college and pro teams?
