Budget no hassle at Big Fresno By ToddHcih StqffWrtter If economics Is a factor in determining how to spend your entertainment dollar, then the Fresno District Fair may be a Jot much has been added to the fair this year, but the plethora of annual activities should be sufficient to satisfy the multitudes that will swarm there through Oct 15. Many CSUF students will be involved in all aspects ofthe fair, said fair spokesperson Jeannette Wamert. An especially large number will be Involved In the livestock and agriculture areas, according to Carolee Bowele, a director in the livestock department New events added this year Include a video competition, for which anyone can make a three-minute documentary or music video, and a chocolate chip cookie contest Sunday. According to Warnert, "We have a real strong ethnic mix." It includes a large number of events that were organized for (be Interest of Hfspanics, such as tbe Fiesta Grande Saturday and the Fiesta del Charro, Oct 14, which will both be mostly in Spanish. The musical lineup In the Paul Paul Theater encompasses a mix of musical genres. Country bands to perform Include the Oak Ridge Boys today, the Charlie Daniels band on Friday, Lee Greenwood on Oct 11 and Highway 101 Oct. 13. Latin will be represented by Martlka on Thursday, Chayanne Oct.10 and Linda Ronstadfs "Candones de ml Padre" with CSUF professor of music Juan Serrano opening Oct 15. Joan Jet t and the Blackhearts will bring her hard edged rock to the fair Oct 14, the bluesy rock group The Fabulous Thurtderbirds will appear Saturday and gospel musicians Be Be and Ce Ce Wlnans and Take Six are scheduled for Oct 9. Smokey Robinson will take the stage Oct 12 with his bra-id of soul, and nostalgia groups The Drifters and the Coasters will play the first show that night r Flnauy, impersonators Rain, doing a tribute to the Beatles, and Rob Banna, doing a tribute to Rod Stewart will perform on Sunday. Entertainment in the grandstand will include Monster Truck Madness today, Ao-obats of China Thursday and Friday, singer Freddy Fender Sunday, the four-wheel pull Oct 9. the Professional Rodeo CowboWs Association will hold their rodeo Oct 10-13 and the destruction derby will be Oct 15. Many sideshows can be found throughout the fairgrounds and at the Pepsi Theater. Some of the guests include: Gordy Ohllger, one of the world's fastest banjo players: Kenny Anderson, a young guitarist from Escondldo. Barnaby. a one-man variety show; the Showboat Marionettes: John T., who plays a bicycle mounted piano; and a variety of clowns. Butler Amusements will provide over 50 rides. 70 games and 10 food trailers to the 'fair. Boys and Girls Clubs of Fresno are selling books of 40 tlcktes for $10. a 50 percent savings. Tuesday, $2 worth of coupons will be Mid for $1 with a Pepsi coupon. On both Wednesdays, all rides will be free from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. For the first time in Northern California. Qulnella wagering will tV offered at the lair. It allows people to make a "$l exacta." Also the regular dairy double and triple wagers wll be offered In the grandstand. Exhibits in the Agriculture. Industrial Arts, Fine Arts and Home Arts buildings are already on display. and the winners in each division have been chosen. The Livestock pavllllon Is also open and the animals are on display. Showings in the college division are at 10 a.m. Saturday and Wednesday thru Saturday showings of the other classes are at varied times. There are many ways for anyone to save on the $5 gate admission. Tuesday, students with an I.D. card will be let in free after 3:30 p.m. Service men in uniform are admitted free any day and family booklets can be purchased for discounted rates at Vons stores.
