The show Is one of Pinter's more recent works, written In 1978, and Js a fine sample of his writing technique. In fact, the stylized script dominates the performances. The three-character play, narrated by a fourth non- integral- player, shows how effective reverse chronology can be in relating a tale of multi-faceted infidelity. Beginning and ending at the exact same moment, the audience travels through years at a time. learning pivotal information moments before its significance is revealed. * The story follows Emma, an art gallery director, and her affair with her husband'sr'best friend. Jerry, over a period of several years. Some people may regard the subject of trysts as archaic. But in "Betrayal," the audience is there, learning, piecing together and discovering almost - but not quite — in synch with the actors. What seems almost an "adventure, more than just observing a series of events. The dialogue in "Betrayal" is outstanding. So good, in fact, that one cannot help but become overly aware of the script and its structure. The actors actually seem to compete the whole time for attention. Even the conversational pauses are an integral part of revealing the psychological motivations of the characters. The words say litUe, yet so mudh. What the characters are not saying carries Just as much weight as the dialogue. And the dialogue ts funny and moving — often both. For example, when Jerry and Emma are talking, confronting themselves and their lives, she asks him to be more specific. He replies, "I'm not trying to say anything, I said precisely what i wanted to say." It makes sense at the moment, and is especially poignant in the last few minutes of the play. The thread is carefully knotted and tied, finishing off a story that is moving without being ponderous. Pinter addresses head-on the games that people play, trying to deceive others and themselves, and in this particular play it works. The Interludes of strained violin music that played during scene changes' set an undeniably melancholy mood. The lighting, however, seemed harsh and poorly focused, resulting In more of a distraction than an enhancement ofthe performers' efforts. As Emma, Deanna Watkins' performance seemed forced, and her repetitive' style of delivery came across as stilted and artificial. Jeff Myers played Emma's 36- ycar-old publisher husband. Robert, convincingly and with all the British reserve that the part calls for. He seemed to be the most successful at relaying the psychology behind the words with a touch of humor.
