V- The undefeated Fresno State football team (6-0 overall. 3-0 in the Big West Conference) hosts the Titans of Cal State Fullerton (3-3-1, 2-1) 7 p.m. Saturday evening at Bulldog Stadium. FSU climbed up three spots in The Sporting News Top 20 poll this week to No. 16. Trie Bulldogs' current 13- game win streak equals the school record and Is tied for the second- longest active NCAA Division IA streak, while head coach Jim Sweeney Is one win shy of 150 for his career. Though Sweeney Is generally Impressed with the FSU defense, he continually marvels at the play of All- American candidate Cox. "We try to recruit players wht) are a force, who can turn a game around," he said. "1 feel like Ron Cox has been a force for us all year. (This year). Cox has been more of a force than anyone in my memory: he's been great against the run. "He's been hurting ack injury), but has done a great job to is." I take my sports seriously. I suffer when my teams lose and when those teams win. I am elated. Fortunately forme, my teams have enjoyed a decent measure of success. In fact, my favorite baseball team (the Athletics) has been to the Series two years straight. Although the A's blew it in 1988 against the Dodgers, they are halfway to Series championship this year. , ButthisyeaVsSeriesisunique. First of aft, it's the first time that the As and their bay area counteipart, the Giants, have faced eachottierintheFallClassic. Itisalsothe first time that a World Series has been postponed because of a natural disaster. I must admit that I was a little miffed when I found out that Game Three was put onhold. I had missed watching both games because I was working. Somehow, I managed to have to Tuesday night off and I was all prepared to take In Game Three. Then the quake hit. At first, ijoked withmy roomie that this wasjust a trick that the Giants were pulling. You know, anything to avoid a sweep. \ But as_the pictures began to filter In, 1 realized that this was no Joke. What had happened was more important than any baseball game. Even the World Series. As sports fans, we must realize the function ol sports. Sometimes we take the outcomes of games too seriously. A defeat is not the end ofthe world. An earthquake can be. The British have had trouble with fan violence after soccer games for ages. Just a couple of years ago, a huge gang fight broke out between rival fans. Several were injured, some seriously. But these types of incidents are not uncommon in the States. Justlastyear, at an A's-Twins double-header. I had the misfortune of witnessing a fight j ust below me. What happened was, a Twins fan bet an Athletics fan a beer on the outcome ofthe first game. The A's lost and the fan refused to pay up. In fact, he became enraged and punched the Twins fan. From there, the incident t-volvedlnto a free-for-all. What I am trying to point out Is that sports are not essential to life. The purpose of sports is to make life more enjoyable, to provide entertainment. The earthquake served as a reminder to us all-sports fans especially- of what matters. Our health, safety and families are all more important than the outcome of a
