Jenni McArtor prefers to concentrate on the team's triumphs. McArtor. Fresno State women's volleyball outside hitter, downed a five-year mark Wednesday night when she surpassed FSU volleyball legend Ruth Lawanson in car-erklllB. The senior from Hoover High School said that while statistics are a trig part of the game, the players do net concentrate on breaking records "1 look more at the win-loss record." McArtor did not think that she would be breaking this parUcuiar record. "I never thought It was within my range." McArtor said.. One thing that she has thought , about is her career. "I'm going to complete my major In commerical advertising," she said, but she plans on taking extra classes Involving set design. McArtor had »an opportunity this summer to visit the set of General Hospital and found the work going on aroundher exciting A self-proclaimed coach potato, she said she would like to work on movie or television set designs. Her ultimate goal would be to design sets for a soap opera because the work Is daily. "I could be a commercial artist, but I don't have the ideas," she said. She admits to doing "a lot of art stuff'but keeps It low key. There have been times when she has ' spent the entire night working on a project "Once you get the process going and see things forming. I can spend 14 hours and not even know It," she said. Her favorite mediums in art are Ink and china markers. She prefers to work solely with the colors black and white. "I like black and white photographs over color." In her plans to shift career goals. she intends to move to the Los Angeles area after completing her work at FSU. McArtor is on a five-year scholarship. "I like the area,' McArtor said. "I Just need a change. 1 grew up in (the Fresno) area." . « McArtor said without a doubt she would have chosen Fresno State over UC Santa Barbara mainly because of the community support "Santa Barbara hardly has anybody attend its games," she said, adding that she was basically bom Into the Bulldog mold. McArtor had a junior season best described as up and down. "I don't know what caused it." she said. "I went game to game not knowing how I would be playing. She suffered a shoulder injury that ' has had a positive effect "I'm just trying to play the game a lot smarter," she said, adding that the injury has caused her to play less of a power game and more of a mind game using dinks and slowing up the pace. A fired-up pace and team is where McArtor finds her inspiration in the game. "When the team is all Qred-up It gets you fired-up." she Ba*kL Bulldogs drop Santa Clara in 3 straight By Jennifer L. Konze Sports Writer It may have taken a little more than a game to do It but senior outside hitter Jenni McArtor got the four kills and broke Ruth Lawanson's five-year standing career kill record Wednesday night Lawanson (1981-84) held the mark with 962 career kills. She was the first FSU female athlete to have her Jersey number (15) retired. She was also the first Bulldog volleyball player to be chosen AlT-Amerlcan and, more recently, to the U.S. National team. When McArtor surpassed the mark, game action was stopped and she was presented with the game ball. McArtor and the Bulldog squad then returned to the task at hand - defeating visiting Santa Clara. FSU defeated the Broncos in straight sets of 15-8, 15-5 and 15-10. Fresno State has not lost a game In thV" North Gym this season.winning 12 consecutive games. The Bulldogs dominated the Broncos for most of the evening, never letting them get ahead by more than three points. Fresno State was down 0-3 In the first game when the offense kicked in, led by senior middle blockers Lesli Lopes and Tammy Lopez and freshman outside hitter Jill "Princeton. The two teams traded sJdeouts with sophomore setter-outslde hitter Tina Kohler leading Santa Clara. ' Lopes got the sldeout for the 'Dogs and the Broncos handed over the point with a kill that went wide and a 2-3 score. Bronco outside hitter Genlce Holmes gave her team another opportunity, but Santa Clara could not capitalize on the point Lopes did for the 'Dogs. getting the touch call off a Bronco block and a sldeout for FSU. Princeton tied up the score with one of her eight kUlson the nlghL A Bronco kill gave them the sldeout but FSU outside hitter Melissa Slmms- Ferrari got the kill and the sldeout for the Dogs. The-Bulldogs then capitalized with Princeton getting a kill off the touch call and the 4-3 lead. Kohler put Santa Clara in position to tie It up, but Holmes lost It on a serving error. The" Broncos then proceeded to commit one of two rotation errors in the game, giving the 'Dogs yet another point and a 5-3 lead. Bronco senior middle blocker Sarah Banales put one down for a Santa Clara sldeout. With outside hitter Liz Naughton serving, the Broncos gained ground with a btork by Banales and setterJuiieJamile. Simms-Ferrari got the kill and the sideout. The Broncos put a kill wide, giving FSU a 6-4 lead. But a service error by FSU put the ball back in Bronco possession. Santa Clara came within one point for tbe last time when Fresno State got called for two hitsonaset Fresno State then gained ground but trailed by Santa Clara. FSU made Its way up to a 15-8 finish.
