Green Editor tnChief To serious beer drinkers, life's a pitcher and then you buy. But, tike the dinosaurs and the dodo birds, pitchers of beer at The Bucket have become extinct Last semester's 64-ounce, $4 jugs of suds are gone. In their place are multitudes of frosty mugs - along with a hefty price increase. A 12-oz. mug of beer that cost 90 cents last semester now costs $1.25. a 39 percent increase. Bottled beer, glasses of wine and food items also received price hikes, according to Bucket supervisor Jeff Flshinghawk. The changes have made some pitcher-less patrons angry. "[Pitchers] are more convenient for one thing." said construction major Kevin Phipps. "I heard they stopped it to control drinking. That's bull-—; I know when to stop." Flshinghawk acknowledged that excessive drinking on the part of some students might have played a part in management's decision. "I don't think they want to promote drinking - that's part of it." he said. But he added that few customers seemed to mind the change. "They seem to handle it pretty good." said Flshinghawk, "We've had a few complaints, but they're ■normally from the people we have problems with, anyway." An Informal survey of Thursday night's customers, however, found that many students disapproved of the new policy and doubted that the lack of pitchers would help to reduce drunkenness. "People are going to get equally ripped if they serve mugs or pitchers." said business major Jill FMlis. Equally unpopular were the price Increases. "Priced the thing that pisses me off." said 21-year-old psychology major Davin Young. "The trend for the bar is to compete with the Black Angus and Willikers." he said, referring to two popular Shaw Avenue nightclubs. "If we wanted to go to Willikers, we'd go to Willikers. The Bucket is supposed to be a place for students to come and get inexpensive drinks, fust like the cafeteria is supposed to serve Inexpensive food." Actually. The Bucket's prices are less than Willikers, which charges $2 for a 16-oz. draft beer, a 20 percent difference. They're equal in one respect though: Willikers doesn't serve pitchers, either.
