Konze Sports Writer The 1989 Bulldog volleyball squad kicks off tonight with a matchup against the University of San Francisco and continues over the weekend with the Dan Camel Invitational. The Lady Dons of USF are an unknown'entiry to the Bulldog squad. The Bulldogs have an 18-0 record with USF. "We don't really know very much about them." said' Lellani Overstreet, 19-year head coach for the squad. What is known about the Lady Dons is that they are playing this season without their top outside hitter. 5-5 senior Kim Gray. She will redshlrt Gray had reconstructive shoulder surgery over the summer, said Laurie Corbelli, head coach for the Lady Dons. "She Wed rehabilitation, but It didn't work." Corbelli said. Aside from losing a starter, the Lady Dons are sporting a young and short team. The only player over the 6-foot mark is starting freshman middle blocker Lisa Tschannen. Tscharmcn Is a Dougherty High School, Colorado Springs, Co. product. The Lady Dons are also starting with a freshman setter. Denis MacDoUgal (5-7) comes from Mountain View High School in Mesa. Az. In the hitting positions. USF has more depth with Juniors Deanne Anastas (5-11) and Jenny Schrack (5-9) as the expected starters. Anastas will double in the middle blocking position. Both have two years experience on the squad? Also with two years of varsity experience is middle blocker DruUeltschi (5-7). Rounding out the squad is 5-7 outside hitter Melanie Kaiser. > A sophomore. Kaiser is a top returnee with 204 kills and 260 defensive saves last season. "We lost four starters," Corbelli said. "We Just want toplaywell." At the Dan Gamel Invitational, the Bulldog diggers play host to three teams — Si. Mary's. Santa Clara and Eastern Washington. Fresno State has never faced EWU. The Bulldogs are 3-0 against the Gaels of SL Mary's. The Gaels sport a 6-3 middle blpcker - Junior Kirsten George (1.99 kpg, .196 hitting pet). The team also has four newcomers 6-foot and over. Against the Santa Clara Broncos, FSU leads 19- 3. The Broncos have a killer duo with junior Julie Jamlle setting ( 5-5. 9.8 apg. 399 digs) and senior Katie Hunsaker (6-0. 323 kills, 52 aces, 346 digs) In the hitting position. The Eastern Washington Eagles have the height with the top returnees and newcomers. However, the squad was 7-18 overall and 4-12 in its conference (BigSky). Fresno State enters tonight's match without a definite starring setter. "We are going to trade off setters," Overstreet said. Ore. this weekend. And that will be no easy "challenge," either. Portland is ranked sixth In the nation by the Soccer America preseason Top 20 poll and first in the All-Far West Region preseason Top 10. Last year. The Pilots compiled a 21-1-0 record and advanced to the NCAA Final Four. "Portland Is one of the top teams in the nation." said FSU head coach Jose Elgorrtaga. "Even though they lost a few good players, playing them at home will especially make them a formidable opponent." But, Portland did not lose sophomore goalie Kasey Keller, who posted 13 shutouts in 22 games last year and earned first team All-Far West honors. The Pilots ended the Bulldogs' 1988 season by shutting them out. 2-0. Portland lost in the Final Ebur to eventual NCAA champion Indiana. The Bulldogs play Portland Sunday, but must face a good Washington team first Saturday. Washington barely missed the NCAA playoffs last year after a 14-4- 1 record and a second-place finish in the Northwest Collegiate Soccer Conference. The Huskies are led by senior forward Eddie Henderson, an All-America candidate, who was the team's leading scorer last year. Another matchup will have Oregon State playing Portland Saturday. -Oregon State then plays.Washington the pogs could have added at least two4iore. FSU loses Martin, Harris By Danin Jones Sports Writer The Fresno State men's basketball team suffered Its first two losses this last week-and the regular Beason is still more than two months away. Peter Martin, a seven-footer who was listed as the Bulldogs starting center, and gaurd Carl Ray Harris. the 1989 Central Section Piayerof the Year, will not play during the 1989 season. Martin decided not to enroll at FSU i this semester'. He was quoted in the ■ Fresno Bee as saying that he had lost his desire to play, and had his doubts while he was being recruited. The loss of Martin, a transfer from Utah Valley Community College, was a surprise to the Bulldog staff. Martin averaged over 22 points a game while pulling down 8.5 rebounds, and was expected to fill FSU's long-standing void at center. Harris, who played for Washington Union High in 1988, was declared acadernlcalfy ineligible for this season. He will not be allowed to practice with the team and must successfully complete at least 24 "units with a 2.0 grade-point average. Harris falls under Proposition 48, which also claimed swingman Tod Bernard last year. Harris had struggled academically last year and failed to pass the ScholasUc Aptitude Test and the American College Test.
