The Daily CoUegian Tuesday, September 19.1989 Page 7 Bulldogs sink at Irvine Water polo goes 1-4 over weekend By Dan Watertaonse Sports Writer Following a 1-4 weekend at the Toshiba/UC [rvlne Tournament, the Bulldog water polo team has the week off from play, but not practice, as FSU prepares for its home opener against UC Santo Barbara Sept 28. There were two bright notes during the tournament for the Bulldogs- Senior goalie Michael Osbom shattered the career steal record by eight steals. With 19 steals during the Irvine tournament, Osbom now has 165 in his career, eight more than the 157 steals goalie Steve Coupland amassed from 1982-85. The other up note for FSU was the result of the rematch with UC Davis Sunday. With Fresno ahead 2-0, the Aggies made a comeback try. Bulldog Don Kenney scored two goals and Alan Stender the third, to turn back the Aggies, 3-2. Head coach Tom Milich said his team may not have been as prepared to play as it could have been. "I think that we beat them so easily the last time, the players were lapsing a bl t," he said. In earlier action, the Bulldogs faced No. 1 Irvine and UC San Diego on Friday. In the match against Irvine, FSU lost 13-5. Wes Threlkeld and Stender each scored two goals and Kenney put one past the Irvine goalie. Despite the score. Milich said the team's level of play against Irvine was actually better than against California In Stockton a week before. Threlkeld and Stender equaled their goal production against the Anteaters in the match against San Diego. Mike Robinson scored the fifth Bulldog tally. Despite the scortng of Trirelkeld, Stender and Robinson, the Bulldogs couldn't overcome the two unanswered goals the Tritons bad scored In the first quarter. The Bulldogs tost a close one, 5-7. Saturday, the Bulldogs opened the day with a match against No. 2 Stanford The scoring leader for FSU was Kenney with tliree. Stender. Threlkeld and Ryan Wade added one each. Milich said that the Bulldogs were able to break the Cardinal counterattack In every quarter except the second and commented that Stanford played with only 13 players. In that second half, the Bulldogs scored four goals to the Cardinal's two. In the first half, Stanford had outscored FSU, 10-2. In the second match Saturday, the Bulldogs lost to top-five team UCLA. The Bruins won. 7-3. Milich felt the UCLA match had been within reach. The Bruins had been leading 5-3 In the fourth quarter, when they scored what Milich described as "two easy goals on cheap plays." Those goals put the match beyond r**ach. In other Bulldog water polo news, tbe Collegian has learned that redshlrt John Walker and a former Bulldog player will be leaving Thursday for Australia. They will be spending the next year playing water polo for club teams. Other past Bulldogs have seen overseas sights In recent years. Rob McCoy spent a "year in Australia in 1986 and Steve Smith coached In Central America In 1985. Current Hoover High coach Terry Glflen spent a year In Europe to the eartv 1980s.
