■' Page 8 Wednesday, May3.1969 The Dotty CdBegTan. BUS Continued trow page 7 It is ouiside where the intense calm is mosi often broken. An elderly buck nun shows off photographs he keeps under his hat. "This is me and my girlfriend, in Juarez," he says, pointing out a battered polaroid "look at her. She ain't lookin' at the camera; die's too busy lookin' at me." "Ha," he laughs. He rambles non-stop, telling anyone* who will listen that tomorrow, in his words, "I'm gonna shake hands with the pope. Gonna shake hands with him, and I'm gonna hug him, like this," he says, putting a big hug on a surprised Juan, the security guard. Juan listens for a while, then walks back "I'm a minister," he says, pulling a card out of his hat which certitues him as a minister of the Universal Life Church. His name is George Slaughter. He intersperses his monologue with inter¬ mittent bible verse and talk of getting married. "I got a lot of girl-friends," he says, "and I'm only 68 yean old. Reverend Slaughter isn't headed any¬ where. Two or three nights a week, a female Greyhound employee, "one of my girlfriends/ brings food for him. He arrives'two hours early and preaches his unique brand of the gospel to anyone willing to listen. Some of the strange ones don't seem to care who's listening; they run on their own iniemai rhythms. I am silting out by the boarding area, sipping a cup of extra-strong machine coffee, when a small man struggles outside and sits down in the next seat. "Is it around five, 4:30, 5:30, four?" he asks. He has a large cast on his right foot and moves with the laborious intensity of a snail. I tell him it is 4:30. "Ah. It's gonna get light soon? Um..,makes me jealous." I ask him where he is from, "San Francisco." I ask him what part of San Francisco he is froni. "San Francsico. You know. Ifs got two coasts, some stuff in the mid¬ dle...sharks, a billionaire's yacht, billion¬ aire, a lousy diner, a billionaire's fucking club on the other side. You know, shit," I ask him where he started traveling. He doesn't answer for a moment. When he does, it seems to bring him pain. "Um, somewhere... i don't remember." He quickly adds, "« got this cast on my leg, and k makes me bred and stuff. "I get it off in a month." We sit in silence for a few minutes. "Yon got your planet clearance?" he - asks. I shake my head; I don't understand. He seems anxious. "You know, your planet clearance," he says. "You've got one. Cost you 15 bucks in San Francisco, a passport You' can go anywhere on the planet I'm traveling on one." He stands with effort Looking around, he shrugs and shuffles slowly toward the waiting bus. r—-™— -i | Two fix one Laundry special! I Wash two loads for the price o! one, I MO LIMIT. | Weekdays only. Please bring coupon. j Expires May 19,1969 He climbs on board; as the bus pulls away, the sky is starting to lighten out onBroadway. - LETTERS Continued from page 2 1989, he is registered for no classes and has never taken any there. There is no reason to believe Sampson knows any more about music ihan the average student, and no offense to most students, but musical critiques (for that is what Sampson's article should have been labeled, not a review) should be written . only by qualified people having formal instruction in music. There is no such, thing as a "universal rule" in art, for where rules are applied, creativity breaks them. And who is he to say that Butler should have ended his piece differently, when much more qual¬ ified people, such as publishers, believe it is perfect just the way it is. Sampson seems to think all music should be performed allegro, mezzo-piano and in a major key. How boring. I hope he attends more concerts, but learns more about music before he criticizes it and displays his ignorance in print The Collegian should take more time to learn whether or not their writers are qualified to write on the subjects they choose. v Sincerely, Kristin Lee Mountain Wash $ 2422 E.
