■' ^ Sports California State University, Fresno MONDAY, MAYl, 1989 Wolf, Jones fight off Rebels By Mark Garcia Sports Writer After being ejected from the game, UNLV coach Fred Daltlmore during unlvs e-3 loss to the Bulldogs at Betden Field Sunday afternoon. body Mark Mhko/DaUy Collegian checks one of the umpires The Bulldogs helped themselves in the race for the for a Big West baseball title, defeating the University of Nevada-Las Vegas Rebels in two out of three games this weekend, including a 6-3 victory at Beiden Field Sunday. FSU, currently ranked 13th in the nation, led throughout the game as Steve Wolf won his third straight to up his record to 8-1. The Bulldogs scored first when Cary Wirtdes hit a two-out double off losing pitcher Tory Miran, 3-4, that scored Steve Hosey. In die third, Fresno State scored three more runs to raise the lead to 4- 0. Tom Goodwin led off the inning with a single and scored when Mike Noel stroked a double off the wall in right-center field. Two outs later Mike Burton drove in his 44th RBI of the season with a single to left. With the throw going to the plate Burton was able to reach second base. That proved to be important as Bur¬ ton was able to score when Hosey hit a shot off third baseman Lan-y Simms that rolled into left Geld for an error. The lead seemed more than enough for Wolf who breezeftthrough the First three innings. But Wolf struggled through the next 2 2/3 innings before bead coach Bob Bennett pulled him for Bobby Jones. "He was starting to get a little bit erratic", said Bennett, "he was getting the ball up and walking people. You have to, at some point, clean the game up, and he kept it a little bit ragged." Wolf gave up three runs, two of them earned, but it could have easily been more. Layne Lambert and Kevin Lofthus opened the fourth inning with con¬ secutive singles, but Wolf was able to strikeout Simms and force Casey Clements to hit into a double play. In the fifth, with the bases loaded, two runs came in on a fielder's choice and an error by shortstop Eddie Zosky. James Martin hit the grounder to Windes who flipped the ball over to Zosky for the force but Zosky's throw to first was in the dirt allowing an¬ other run to score. With the score 4-2. Lofthus, who leads the Big West in home runs, launched his 20th homer of the season to cut the lead to one. After a walk- in See UNLV, page 7 fDogs sweep Cal for 8th straight win By Eric Maddy Sports Writer The Fresno State sofiball team has exploded out of a two-week-long slump, extending their win skein to eight with a sweep of California by scores of 2-1 and 3-2, Sunday at Bulldog Diamond. The Go'jer Bears cruised into Fresno ranked ni r, r. the nation. They left with a pair of one-run losses and a 38-22 record ' ' Fresno State (47-12) relied on pitching in the first game win. Cal scored first in the opener. Robyn Burgess led off the third inning with a double to the gap in left-center field. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a ground ball by Christy Calderon. But while die Golden Bears never threatened again, the 'Dogs were just get¬ ting warmed up. Fresno State got leadoff men aboard in each of the first two in¬ nings, but were .stymied. In the fourth inning, though, the Bulldogs went to work. Kathy Mayer led off the inning with a chop single into center field. She moved to second on a ground out and to third on Shelly Stokes' single. Kerri Donis followed with a double to the base of the left-field fence against Burgess, scoring both runners easily and giving FSU a 2-1 lead. Carpenter allowed only two base- runners the rest of the way, and game one went to Fresno State. In the nightcap, the visitors put a scare into the crowd of 899 at Bulldog Di¬ amond. Carie Dover's first pitch hit Cal centerfielder Marielle Vaughn. Vaughn moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and gave the Bears a 1-0 lead when Angie Jacobs singled past Kerri Donis and into right field. The same two principals were responsible for the second Cal run. Vaughn walked with one down in the third, and stole second base. Val Altamirano then bunted to move her over. Dever fielded the bunt and tried to nail Vaughn at third, but her throw went awry and both runners were safe. Jacobs then hit a ground ball at a charging Kathy Mayer, but the 'Dogs had no play on the speedy Vaughn and the visitors led 2-0. Meanwhile, the Fresno State bats were silent Erin Cassidy retired 16 of 17 Bulldogs and didn't allow, a hit until RaeAnn Pifferini singled with two''out in the sixth.
