^ - Page 4 Wednesday. May 10.1989 The Daily CoOegian ■ Choir showcases standout singers By Lynn Sampson Contributing Writer JL caught part of a Joint choral recital last night. Though fcame laic, I was able lo hear almost half of the Siena Schola Cantorum's program and all of the Cham¬ ber Singers' portion of the concert The Sierra Schola Cantorum is a seven voice ensemble-six men and one woman. Its specialty is vocal music prior to 1650, Of the pieces heard, John Wilbye's "Cruel, Behold My Heavy Ending" was easily the best " There is an extremely vast literature for voice from this period The program last night sampled Italian, English, Dutch and German composers of the Renaissance. Bass Curtis Lee is a star. His easy, rich bass voice needs to be utilized even more. .1. he Schola Cantorum has an odd disuibulion of voice parts. One lone soprano has to contend with two counter-tenors, one tenor, two baritones, and one bass. It's an unfair matchup from the start. Give the girl a break and add some reinforcements. I don't think there i any good musical justification for making the group so lopsided. Paul Bolm, tenor, sang beautifully. His is another truly exceptional voice in this vocal group. Unfortunately, the whole is not as strong as its parts Review in this particular choir. The group needs a more robust style and less attention to delail and meticulousness. One other comment— I drove clear across town in the rain last night to be at Fresno's Church of the Brethem in hopes of hearing some Gregorian Chant. There was none to be had. Might I ask that some of the most powerful music known be included on the next con¬ cert—namely pre-Twelfth Century chant I drove home dejectedly without having heard a single note written prior to 1500. Ne ext, the Chamber Singers took the stage and gave a cursory performance of six songs ranging from Italian art song to modem popular ballad. One song, by Californian Kurt Mcchem, displayed that composer's unending fascination with light, trivial music. I found "Lightheaded Lovers" a good idea gone sour by the end of the piece. It just didn't quite succeed. Humor in music is chancy at best and the joke in "Lighthcaned Lovers" went on a little too long and ultimately never really arrived. The flawless Italian diction of Rossini's "1 Gondolieri" spilled out over the audience in a vivacious rendition. I've never heard this particular choir sing better than in this, its opening number to the second half of the Concerts don't have to be long to be good. They do, however, need to a little longer than last night's. An hour and twenty minutes with intermission is just not enough to be satisfying. The audience was teased, not gratified . There seems to be a lot of hubbub over my status as a graduate student Yes, Virginia, I really am a grad student Since there seems to be more than a few people interested, I will give you the details. I start classes at Fresno Pacific College on June 19th.- I will be studying for a master's in music education, the first to be granted by that institution. To make this possible 1 will be taking some of my classes at CSUF and the rest at Fresno Pacific. Prior to that I was a professional singer in San Francisco and a music director of a Catholic parish. Before that, I was affiliated with Stanford University for nearly two years. Before that I was a lonely street- person writing music reviews on scraps of paper I found on the sidewalks and giving them lo people as they passed. M, [y wretched and withered body was clothed in rags and I was unloved and unwanted by society. Now, I have found a meaning for my pathetic existence as ihe critic for The Daily Collegian. I dress better, but I fear I'm still unloved and unwanted. FRAT Continued from page 3 Greek membership bigger and stronger." Walter Robinson, the president's assist¬ ant in charge of affirmative action, is former adviser for Phi Beta Sigma and adviser to the Black Student Union. He called Wells' phone call to him "a good beginning," byt said there needed to be more. "IPC needs to approach each organ¬ ization individually," said Robinson. "I know he doesn't have to do a sales job for traditionally white fraternities," but added that Wells might for predominately black fraternities. Wells said he would like to meet with all the various fraternities to discuss issues concerning the Greek system. "A couple of times a semester, I'd like for us to get around a big table and talk about issues," to see how IPC could help them, he said. Kelvin Ashford, president of Alpha Phi Alpha, said there is definitely a split between the fratemites. "It's not their [IPC's] fault." he said. "We're different in ideals and purpos-es." One move that Ashford said might cause the predominantly black fraternities to become involved in IFC would be to put some black fraternity members on the council. "It would give us a sense of power," he said. "In my view, right now we feel the way things are being run, it's not necessarily for us. ..we feel out of place." Wells said a "self-imposed integration" between the fraternities would be a start to "wipe out" the racism rumored to be happening at l_"J>Ur\ "But the main reason for doing this is we'll make the whole Greek system stronger," he said Wayne Bird, faculty adviser to Phi Beta Sigma, said it was "nice" that IFC was inviting black fraternity brothers to events, but thought a discussion of issues would be of more interest to them. "I think an invitation like that would bring people together," said Bird. "Let's have a round table about racism or sexism, that'll spark our interest "We deal with three ideals: business, social activity and education," he said. "Let's talk about issues." Bird, who said he was supportive of the Greek system, said the social differences of the fraternities might be a reason why the predominantly black fraternities are not involved in IFC.
