APRIL 4, 1989 Steve PrmgWDoi/y Collegian The Fresno Stale women's tennis team travels to San Jose State today.TTie Bulldog netters snapped a flve-game losing streak with a win over Santa Clara, 7-2, Friday. FSU dropped only two matches to the Broncos, both were Injury defaults by Maria Mendez (above) In the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. Mendez Is scheduled to play against the Spartans today. The team returns home Saturday to host Cal State Stanislaus at 11 a.m. 'Dogs host Mustangs After the first Big West weekend, Fresno State's No. 16-ranked baseball team is in a four-way tie for first after posting a 2-1 series with Long Beach State at Long Beach. Tonight they host Cal Poly-SLO in a makeup game from the Feb. 8 rainout at Beiden Field at 7 p.m. Thell Mustangs enter the week 18- 14 overall and 8-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. They lead Cal Poly-Pomona by half a game. The Mustangs are ranked eighth nationally at the Division II level by Baseball America. Last week they took a 3-5 road trip splitting with Cal State Los Angeles and taking two of three from Chapman. Fresno State, 22-12, is scheduled to start junior right-hander Ranbir Grewal (1-1, 5.79 ERA) against Cal Poly's Greg Paxton (Sr., RHP). Paxton finished last season with a 4- 4 record and a 5.39 ERA. Cal Poly returns 14 letterman includ¬ ing five standouts: senior outfielders Rich Shepperd, Todd Rice and Billy Smith, junior first baseman Pat Kirby and junior catcher Doug Noce. Offensively, all five hit above the .300 mark with Sheppard and Kirby leading the way at .355. Sheppard hit eight home runs and drove in 53 RBI's last season. He also stole 12 bases. The Bulldogs will counter the Mus¬ tangs with hot bats. Junior outfielder Tom Goodwin ex¬ tended his hitting streak to 22, two games from matching the school record set by Terry Pendleton in 1982 and matched by Scott Buss in 1984. Senior catcher Steve Vondran also extended a streak. He has driven in at least one run in 13 games. His RBI total of 47 is two more than he had all last Vondran leads the team in average (Mt), home runs (9) and RBIs (47). He has also come through in the clutch, with men in scoring position (.490). Outfielder Steve Hosey has a 10-game hitting streak with a .319 season baiting average. During his hitting streak he has gathered three doubles and six RBIs. Fresno Stale is 16-7 at home.
