The Subterranean Jungle "l love it. but it has no worth here. Sorryt' Friday, April 7, 1989 M. -y name is Henry. I'm a jeans addict. Not just any kind of jeans, mind you. not acid-wash or ripped, Guess? or Jordache; mine is a far more horrible crime: applique. You know what I'm talking about. Those jeans with bright, plastic colors all over them, the kind that haven't been seen in public, aside from the occasional high school production of "Godspell," since, oh, about 1972.1 AM NOT AN ANIMAL! I AM A HUMAN BEING. Sorry. I still tend to get a little emotional about the whole ordeal. Before, 1 always thought, "Oh, it can't happen to me." Boy was I wrong. Being addicted to jeans, especially jeans with little bright doodads like buttons and orange moons and rainbows and embroidered names and phrases and metal studs and red and green gimcracks and...well, as you can see, once you fall into this pit, it's almost impossible to climb back into the real world. It all started about three years ago. I remember it as if it were yesterday... My girlfriend had given me a book for Christmas, "The Jeans Book." Let me say that I've always been kind of a Addiction . Boy.. .1 like to embroider! And I love to sew! hobbyist when it comes to arts and crafts. I love making wallets and purses for my friends, and you can do it for just pennies. So, when I saw the book, I got a little excited. The people on the cover were wearing jeans, appliqued jeans, walking through a meadow, and they looked so happy I started to cry. My girlfriend noticed my odd behavior, so I put the book away with a promise to peruse it at length later. The next few hours were torture. My girlfriend tried to entertain me with boring talk of her new job and idle threats of leaving me for a basketball team, but all of my thoughts were on The Book, Finally, she left. I hastily shut all the curtains, locked the door and opened the book. It was everything I had hoped and dreamed it would be. I was in Earthcraft™ heaven. Not only did the book show detailed drawings of jeans, jeans and more jeans, it also contained, for each pair, directions on how to make your own pair of exact duplicate ones. The writer, Jann Johnson, also threw in friendly little touches that made the reader want to hug her, such as:"To say something about Lynne, she does love handicrafts. She likes to embroider and she loves to sew, and that's why the design for these jeans is perfect for her." Boy, I thought, I like to embroider! And I love to sew! Right then I wished really hard that I was. Lynne; that way, I could hang around with Jann and be her buddy, and we could make jean patterns all the time. I . briefly thought of calling up Jann and saying "Hi!" but I looked in the front of the book and found out that it was published in 1972. Jann might be dead, and if she's still alive, she might be mean and hate jeans now. No way Please see Jeans, Page 6 Each stripe is width of V, star yellow
