MARCH 6. 1989 Regular season ends with win By Mara* Masscchio Sports Writer The Bulldogs lopped off an up-and-down season with a big 69-39 victory over Utah Siaie Saturday nigra, sending them toward the Big West Tournament in a position 10 record their first winning season in four yean. The win completed the "Dogs regulation conference season at 9-9. They are 14-13 overall and are guaranteed of their first non-losing season since Boyd Grant left the team in 1985. "It was a great season-ending Seniors Night win for us." said Ron Adams. The Bulldog coach felt that his seniors came out well prepared and ready lo play and ■hat merest of the learn played hard ic support them. It was the last game at Selland Arena for seniors Jervis Cole, Kevin Stevenson, Derrick Barden and Rene Ebcltjes. "We wanted to win it for ourselves, the coaches, the fans and everyone connected with the program," said Cote. He also contributed five rebounds and two steals. Cole is currenUy fourth in FSU career scoring with 1,440 points. He needs just 13 points in the confer¬ ence tournament to pass Bernard Thompson and be¬ come third on the all-time FSU scoring list. Senior guard Stevenson poured in 18 points in his final game in front of the home crowd. "I just realized I'm going to miss playing here," said Stevenson. Stevenson is ending his college career in lop form. In the last six games Stevenson has averaged over IS points and five assists per game. Barden contributed six points, seven rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots to the victory. Barden is the ■op shot blocker in FSU hisioiy with 51 on ihe season and 124 in his career. Ebeltjes wasn't able to end his career in the fashion he would have liked. The 6-foot-11 center from Enshede, Holland, has seen reduced playing time lately, due to back stiffness and a sore knee. Ebeltjes played only 14 minutes, contributing two points, two rebounds and a steal. On a night that showcased the passing of the old, freshman Wilben Hooker sent a message for the future. Hooker scored 10 points, including two three-pointers. while pulling down seven boards and making four assists. "He's the most mature freshman I've ever seen," Adams said of Hooker. "There hasn't been a time this year when he hasn't gone in ready lo play." The game was tied early at five, but the 'Dogs ran off a 12-4 spree and were able to keep Utah Stale at arms length for the rest of the game. Adams credited his team's ability to remain patient and follow their game plan. "(Utah Stale) is explosive if they get in a certain rhythm," said Adams. "We did a good job of following our game plan and keeping them out of that rhythm." High scorers for Utah Stale were Kendall Youngblood. Rod Newey and Dan Conway, all with 10 points. The Fresno State right-hander heat the Beavers to just four hits, walking three and striking out seven as the Bulldogs defeated Oregon Stale University (OSU) 2-1 before 1.646 fans al Beiden Field. The win was the Bulldogs ninth in 11 games improving their record lo 10-7. The loss dropped the Beavers to 5-5. Wolf, 4-0, was dominant early on as he retired the first 13 OSU batters. "Steve has been on the verge of pitching a great game," said head coach Bob Bennett," today he came through." Two dropped balls with plays at the plate by Steve Vondran allowed for the runs in the fifth and sixth.
